Description

New commission: All-Star Squadron #117, homaging as always the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Avengers #102, original cover by Rich Buckler. Art for this one was by the always-incredible John Watson, who did a fantastic job as ever.

Title: "With This Ring..."

Story: GL and the Flash are due to meet Wonder Woman for a publicity photo-shoot to promote paper drives, but, when the Amazing Amazon doesn't show up, the two heroes hunt for her. When reporter 'Scoop' Scanlon lets them know she'd been asking questions about an abandoned building project, Alan and Jay go to investigate, only to find Wonder Woman unconscious and held hostage - by the Ultra-Humanite!

Knockout gas lays the Flash low, and Ultra reveals that Dolores Winters' body had been separately teleported to safety without Deathbolt's knowledge following the events of Annual #2 and, after the failure to take over the body of a living dinosaur (Young All-Stars #13-15), his brain had been re-implanted in his former host body.

Deciding that his plans require another object of power, following the destruction of the Powerstone and Hammer Of Thor, Ultra concluded that Wonder Woman's bracelets and lasso might fit the bill, but now Green Lantern is present, then his ring will be the perfect artifact --- and threatens to kill the Amazon unless GL surrenders it.

Luckily the Flash revives (at super-speed, he'd managed to disperse all but the smallest fraction of the gas, so it only affected him temporarily) and the two heroes team up to battle Ultra. Facing defeat, the villain teleports away, allowing Flash and GL to free Wonder Woman and return to their photo-shoot (which will eventually see print as the cover of Comic Cavalcade #6, in 1944 - but which obviously happened over a year before).

I couldn't resist using Wonder Woman to replace Wonder *Man* on the original cover - but I should say that when I first thought of using this one, I was going to break my own rule and, while Robotman would have stood in for the Vision, the hero in the tube would have been .... the public domain hero Wonder Man, originally published by Victor Fox (I figure that since Roy used some public domain heroes in the 1993 Invaders mini-series, he might have decided to do so a couple of years earlier if All-Star Squadron had remained in production).
