DescriptionI gave myself a challenge a few weeks back. Ever since I read the reboot of Shazam back in 2011 by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, I'd always wanted to tackle that character. The film and the DC Online Documentary I checked out two weeks prior gave me the final push. It's all about that iconic moment when Billy Batson says The Wizard's name. That was the only way to conceptualize my own take on The World's Mightiest Mortal. With 9 x 12" Canson and mixed media, I'm pleased to finally unveil my Shazam piece. I know that artist Dale Eaglesham simplified the design of his tunic, but I just found that ribbed look of the tunic so striking from Gary's redesign that I needed to capture it. While there are some aspects of this sketch that I wish I could redo, there's no complaint about my lightning effects. A combination of Acrylics, Prismacolor, Copics, and good ol' white-out, I managed to not only evoke the power of that magic word, but also incorporate the "lightning from my hands" motif he sports these days. I'm also especially proud of the Wizard's face. Referencing Djimon Honsou's look from the film, I chose to convey the spirit of the Wizard being present every time Billy says his name. I'm very proud of the final result in an experimental approach that I've never done before. I used blue-violet tones for his face, red-violet for that bandanna, and finally straight violet tones for the hair and beard. It perfectly distinguished him from the dark blue tones I chose for the storm clouds and served to create the illusion of shadow that gave that face depth. I'm extremely proud of this piece overall and will list it also in my "Art For Sale" Section.Social/Sharing |
