Description
Latest "Continuation Project" commission - issue #118, art by Bambos Georgiou, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case X-Men #92 (which reprinted #44), original art by Ron Wilson and Frank Giacoia. I'm also posting the title page since some online sources credit Gary Friedrich as the writer, but as the scan shows, Roy is credited there as the plotter.
Title: "Learning To Fly."
Story: This is the latest of the regular "Altered Egos" spotlight issues, in which Jonathan (Tarantula) Law gets details from one of his All-Star comrades for his post-war book. This time - with Roy (Human Bomb) Lincoln in town to meet with military authorities about the potential use of explosive 27QRX in munitions, and Fawcett City District Attorney Brian Butler (and son Pinkerton), secretly Mr Scarlet and Pinky The Whiz Kid, visiting New York to consult with his counterparts Frank Hogan (the historical New York DA) and Gotham City's DA Harvey Kent - Hawkgirl takes part in a training session with the visiting heroes, plus Tarantula and Miss America.
After demonstrating her aerial prowess and claiming victory in a mock battle, Shiera Sanders discusses her life with Jonathan Law as the other heroes depart -- orphaned at an early age, she was brought up in the Mid-West by an aunt and uncle, exploring the Wyoming Badlands as a teenager with her older cousin Greg (later to gain fame on radio and in the movies as the Prairie Troubadour - and secretly the Vigilante), where she gained her love for archaeology.
Moving back to New York at 18, she was saved from the evil schemes of Professor Hastor by Carter Hall, and discovered that she was the reincarnation of Princess Chay-ara, lover of Prince Khufu, one of Hall's previous incarnations. Adopting a variant of his Hawkman costume, she aids the JSA in their fight with Mr X and then becomes a full-time heroine. Although disappointed not to be invited to join the Justice Society, she found her place as a key member of the All-Star Squadron!
After wrapping up her interview, Hawkgirl prepares to depart, only to be hailed by Wonder Woman, who has shocking news - the JSA members have vanished, and the Amazing Amazon needs Hawkgirl's help to find them!
To be continued, in All-Star Squadron Annual #8, which will tell the *real* story behind the events recounted in All-Star Comics #15 - coming soon (I hope - it's out with an artist right now)!
I should say that the Shiera Sanders / Greg Sanders connection is my invention (as far as I can tell) - it just seemed too good to resist.
