10x14-3/8" thick artboard has mixed media original art by prolific and renowned Spanish Marvel Comics cover artist Rafael López Espí. Cover is for the Spanish Capitan America Vol. 3, #18, which reprints three issues of Captain America (#135-137) by Stan Lee and Gene Colan from 1971 and was published in Spain by Mundi in 1974, ©1973 Marvel Comics Group. Artboard has been hand-painted from edge to edge w/main image area showing Captain America in battle w/The Monster Ape (in reality, Dr. Eric Gorbo, changed via a potion) measuring 8.5x10.5". Art has vellum overlay which has extensive handwritten Spanish text (including title at top) in blue ink along left margin, text being that which would be printed on published comic. Scattered editorial notes w/splotch of red paint (in a different shade than seen on final printed issue. Overlay consists of two pieces of paper taped together at center w/two aged piece of tape and is taped to back of artboard, which has handwritten "C. America, 18" at top in black felt tip pen. Art has pasted story title strip translates to "More Monster Than Man" attached at bottom, w/1.25" spot of aging. Artboard has some minor corner tip wear but o/w art remains bright, clean and Exc. A wonderful example from the 1970s, when Espí's art dominated covers of Spanish Marvel comic books, featuring one of Marvel's most popular characters. Superb and dynamic cover art, unique to this issue and not an interpretation of an American cover. Comes w/reading copy of the Spanish comic this cover art was created for.
