DescriptionMaybe the most significant page from my collection and the first appearance of John Byrne's Jonathan Kent and Clark Kent (if you don't count the prior page with helmet on).John Byrne reinvented Superman for a whole new generation of fans and to many, including me, his Superman is the definitive version. Man of Steel miniseries does not have the same cultural cache as the Dark Knight Returns, but in my mind they do. That's because I was exposed to both at the same formative time in my youth. My mom who was not a comics fan understood the importance of both works and brought home the trade paperbacks for me. I recall reading this page and being blown away by the artwork/story. Young Clark Kent had always been depicted as knowing his origin and holding back his powers. In Man of Steel, John Byrne made him a football hero who was not yet aware of the source of his strength on the football field. The inking on the series was credited to Dick Giordano but on his Web site Byrne says he thinks it was Frank McLaughlin. Either way, this is one of the most significant projects of JB's long career. And you gotta love the emotion in that last panel of a disapproving Jonathan Kent who is about to tell a young Clark where he came from. My mom has passed away now but I did share with her when she was still here that I purchased this page because she introduced me to this story. She understood my love for comics and thought that was pretty cool. Social/Sharing |

Congrats on adding such a nice Byrne MOS page. His run on the miniseries and then Action Comics/Superman is my favourite for the character. That you have such a personal connection to this makes it all the more special.
