Description

Here's another flashback page to the Black Widow's first mission. Natasha is gradually reinventing herself from the established spy fiction tropes of the times, declining to be a compliant ingénue to chauvinist exemplar Danny French's unwelcome advances. If you were a fan of James Bond movies growing up in this era, it wasn't unusual to have a pretty confused and regressive conception of how women liked to be treated.

This tale of the early Black Widow has probably been retconned out of existence several times by now. I admit to taking a dim view of the repeated meddling with Natasha's back story in modern comics. Jack Kirby advised young artists to create their own new characters, rather than to riff endlessly on his own previous work, and I think that applies to these endless retcons and reboots, as well. The current Black Widow is a clone, Natasha having been murdered by Captain America; her pre-Avengers history is now romantically linked to Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (she's interesting enough on her own without endlessly pairing her off with other heroes) and, worst of all Ivan Petrovich, Natasha's surrogate father- and later chauffeur and confidant- was retconned into a homicidal incest-robot. I hope that, when they die, these modern comics writers have to answer for their unpardonable sins.

Don't get me started on what they did to Gwen Stacy.

Methinks, after your mini rant about shamelessly erasing comic history, you are slightly miffed. Not as miffed as I was when everyone forgot Spider-Man was Peter Parker due to the truly, eye wateringly awful, Brand New Day, Mephisto nonsense. Spider- Gwen. Well, I would not kick her out of bed, if she was real! The only marvel character, still dead is Uncle Ben or is he alive now? I gave up reading Spider-Man. Too many bad cooks spoiled it. AARGH. The Hulk too, Ruined. Me want to smash bad writers, like Hulk and me is not even green.

Another outstanding Widow page!  Of all the classic Marvel books, I'm most forgiving about revisionist history with DD since I've been amazed over and over again as one creative team after another has revamped the story and all the characters in DD's universe.  For instance, if Miller hadn't exploded onto the scene and created Elektra out of whole cloth, the series might have died with the close of the 70s.  I was already a burgeoning Colan fan by then, but without the resurgence of interest and quality in superhero comics in the 80s I may not have ever gone back to mine all the great Colan issues I missed the first time.
