DescriptionIn space, no one can hear you scream! You know, much has been said and many theories have been posited in regards to what would happen to the human body if it were to suddenly be ejected unprotected into outer space, but unless someone decides to one day sacrifice themselves for our amusement, I don't think we'll ever really know. But put me firmly in the camp that does NOT believe a person could survive anywhere near as long as 15 seconds. Given that the temperature in outer space is −454.81°F (−270.45 °C) and that it is even colder than liquid nitrogen, my guess is that if you opened the hatch and got sucked out, you would experience near instantaneous death. I mean does anyone actually believe that if a human jumped into a vat of liquid nitrogen, they'd have any time to catch a single breath, let alone live long enough to struggle and flap their arms wildly about in an attempt to stay afloat? My guess is that the shock of the sheer cold would penetrate the entire body and turn your lights out within the first second.Anyway, here is the latest addition to my Grummett Superboy collection, from late in Grummett and Kesel's 2nd run on the title. I really enjoy how Grummett designed the image by splitting it off diagonally so that the darkness of space on the left side provides a beautiful and opposing contrast against the white of the hull of the "Death Star" on the right side. I also have to give credit for the interesting blue collar worker "costume" design Grummett came up with here, as it really does look like what you'd picture someone wearing if they were a mechanic of sorts, working in the interior of a "Death Star". Kudos as well to Karl Kesel, who over time has become my favourite inker over Grummett, as he stayed as faithful to Tom's pencil lines more than anyone else and I'm a big believer that one of the inker's primary functions should be to ink in service of the penciller's style. Well, it certainly wouldn't lead to a good day, that much is for sure! Agreed, his inkling is faithful and looks great over Grummett's pencils. All these Superboy covers really give a newfound appreciation of how fun that run was, and how on-point he was on the covers. Another great addition. Congrats!

Well, I guess if you're Superboy, or whatever the hell those other alien dudes are, you might be able to last for 15 seconds, but as far as mere mortals go, I'm with you. It aint gonna happen. Your description immediately brought to mind that disturbing, yet also comical scene in "Total Recall" where Arnold is exposed to the atmosphere of Mars and his face gets all bug-eyed and contorted. Luckily for him it only took seconds for the alien machinery to make the air nice and breathable. They just don't build 'em like that anymore, do they. Anyway ... I really love this cover scene, and I agree, the contrast between the blackness of space and the white Death Star hull is a very cool design feature. Love these Superboy covers. Keep 'em comin' !!
