Description

I couldn't resist this when I saw it for sale. This is the title splash to the last Jim Sherman Legion issue featuring Wildfire, Mon-El, Dawnstar and Ultra Boy confronting Ambassador Relnic of the United Planets. This dramatic page features some great inking by McLeod with lots of Zip-A-Tone and skillful work in getting the reflection to look right. It also has some imaginative title lettering by Ben Oda.

The page took a trip around the world as it was sold by Anthony Snyder to a collector in Australia in 2011 and it's now back in the New York City area.

As is often the case, the Zip-A-Tone looks a little funky in the scan, but it looks great in person. The border of the art board was covered in tape for whatever reason, which is why it looks like a different color than the rest of the art.

Now that is some serious or rather some seriously great Zip-A-Tone usage.

Oh!! That page has always given me goosebumps from the moment I saw it as a teen. It only gets better over time. Congratulations Ted !

70's Legion has always been sought after by original art fans.  Cockrum redesigned them much like he would do for the X-Men years later.  Sherman kept up the same detailed art of his predecessors and his team dynamic showed off each member's unique abilities with high quality work like in this splash.  The reflection off Wildfire is a unique effect with a combination of paint, zip, and ink.

If only he'd thought to use a bit more zip-a-tone this splash could have been perfect!

Love the impact of the smashing fist on the story title - very cool and imaginative.

Ha yeah -- there's still about 10% uncovered artwork.  Thankfully I love Zip-A-Tone!

Actually I do too.  And I think if ever a contest for the most page coverage you may have the winner.

Using zipatone for that reflection is a very cool idea. Heck, I'm not sure if I've ever seen someone use more zipatone, and I'm here for it. Sweet legion title splash. Congrats!

This page may hold the record for the largest area covered in zip-a-tone, and it's FANTASTIC!

Stunning page, it looks even better in the original black & white. Sherman & McLeod made a great art team, and I wish they had worked together more often.
