DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #137, art by Bambos Georgiou, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Thor #477, original art by M C Wyman - this was part of Roy's mid-90s return to Thor and, while the original cover is a bit too 90s for my taste, I think it makes a great template.Title: "Mettle!" Story: With many of his fellow Squadron members busy with cases of their own, Alan (Green Lantern) Scott flies to Keystone City to meet with his friend Jay (The Flash) Garrick. As he approaches the city's central district, however, he's distracted by a large explosion! Flying to investigate, he finds the Flash at the mercy of an armour-clad figure, who's administering a severe beating to his comrade. As he goes to join the fight, the villain - who identifies himself as Metalo - rips a tree from the sidewalk and hurls it at GL, and since his ring is powerless against wood, it crashes into him, temporarily knocking him to the ground and into a daze. When he comes round, the villain has vanished, and GL and the Flash are being helped towards an ambulance. Refusing help, the two heroes take off to compare notes. The Flash fills Green Lantern in - Metalo, a former antagonist of Superman (from World's Finest Comics #6) who'd been thought dead, appeared in Keystone a day earlier and had immediately started breaking into banks, including stealing monies being stored as part of a recent war bond drive. Garrick had begun to search the city at speed, encountering the villain as he attacked an armoured car transporting wages to a nearby defence plant - but Metalo's powered armour clearly enhances his speed as well as his strength, as he'd caught the Flash off-guard before GL arrived. The two heroes decide to team up, with Green Lantern conducting aerial surveillance while the Flash searches at ground level. After a few hours, they locate Metalo again, in the process of breaking into a warehouse, and engage with him! After a battle, the heroes are on the verge of subduing the villain when he strikes out at the warehouse walls, bringing the building down and forcing Flash and GL to save the workforce --- and by the time that's achieved, Metalo has once again vanished. The heroes vow to continue the hunt for their new nemesis - but who knows when they might encounter him again? I had the idea to use Metalo (yes, only one "L") some time ago, as he was one of the early Golden Age villains with powers, and despite having been shown to have survived 1942 his battle with Superman, he didn't appear again for four decades, and that seemed a bit of a waste. I used his later armoured suit, as the initial design wasn't the greatest - and Bambos did a great job depicting him in battle with two of the JSA's members. Social/Sharing |

Thor 477 is a fantastic cover to use. The big wind up with one hero down and one racing to save him is tension inducing and adrenaline pumping composition!
