DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #135, art by Stephen Baskerville, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Conan #67, original art by Gil Kane and Al Milgrom - having done a four-part story featuring the Shining Knight *without* using one of Roy's many Conan covers as a template, it amused me to use one for a cover starting a different sword-wielding hero.Title: "The Ghost And Miss Kosmatos!" Story: Several All-Stars are gathered at the Perisphere - Liberty Belle, Johnny Quick, Robotman, co-chair Hawkman and his paramour Hawkgirl, Ibis The Invincible (standing in for Spy Smasher) and Doll Man (deputising for Uncle Sam), along with Air Wave, using his radio expertise to modulate a transatlantic call to their fellow hero Captain X Of The RAF, who's based in England. The heroic aviator has clearance from FDR to fly into Occupied Europe, and is preparing to do so on a top-secret mission for the Special Operations Executive, liaising with one of the heroes working undercover behind enemy lines. After wishing him luck - and arranging for a debrief in a few days when Captain X returns - the heroes in New York sign off. As they prepare to go their separate ways, however, the Perisphere is invaded --- by the Grim Ghost, his ectoplasmic form severely injured! Ibis uses his Ibistick to heal the Ghost, remarking to his comrades that only powerful magic could have inflicted such wounds - and the newly-arrived hero passes on his tale. While on patrol, the Grim Ghost had seen a pack of demons abducting a young woman, and rushed to her aid, only to be temporarily overcome. After recovering, he tracked the demons to an underground lair, discovering the abductee was in fact Helena (Fury) Kosmatos - and her abductor was none other than the former foe of Doctor Fate and the All-Star Squadron, the arch-mage Wotan! Mystically entrapping the Grim Ghost, Wotan revealed that he had escaped from the other-dimensional prison the All-Stars had sentenced him to (as seen in #128) when a shift in the very fabric of space-time had disrupted that dimension (a shift caused, although the Squadron members don't know it, by Degaton's changing of history in #120), and he had returned to Earth to get revenge. Discovering Fury's secret identity, he had captured her, as she would be an integral part of his plan! Just as the Grim Ghost is about to conclude his story, the Perisphere is rocked by an attack from outside! The heroes rush outdoors, as the Ghost explains that he had escaped from Wotan's grasp only after the villain had carried out his plan - magically separating Fury from Tisiphone and binding the Blood Avenger to his will --- and it's Tisiphone, with the unconscious form of Fury in her grasp, who now assaults both the Perisphere and the All-Star Squadron! Continued - next issue! As the Grim Ghost is one of the very small number of heroes who appeared on a Young All-Stars cover but was never seen in the interior of either a YAS or All-Star Squadron issue, I thought it was time that omission was corrected (I used him in the story for #98-100, but not on the covers) - and you can expect to see more similarly-obscure heroes in the course of the next few issues. The Gil Kane composition is real solid and using it this way is a great compliment . Baskerville excels with so much tight detail put into the work.

Stephen tells me he loves using Gil Kane covers as templates.
Luckily I have at least one more heading his way...

Gil Kane was definitely one of the best and most prolific cover designers in the 70's along with Marie Severin and Dave Cockrum. Gil was quite the comic art collector too.
