Description

After being largely shut out during three days of auctions for Hunt watercolors, I finally got one -- and one that was very important for my collection. Hunt painted a few watercolors of woman reading by various forms of candlelight, and this is probably my favorite of that type. I have wanted it since May 1986, when I first saw it at the home of a newly-retired dealer in English watercolors. He actually had shut down his gallery the day before I first made it back to England after having discovered Hunt's work in 1977. BTW, I'm not really complaining, but the other Hunt watercolors which were sold at two auctions earlier this week went for astonishingly high prices -- I underbid a couple of them, including the one which sold for the most. Unless the heirs of that dealer, who died 11 years ago, were somehow involved in dividing up the dealers art by bidding against each other and paying with their shares of the money realized by the estate, the high prices and the relative prices for so many Hunt watercolors over a very short period of time make no sense at all. I'm just glad I didn't throw in the towel after some major auction disappointments, because I was really beginning to fear that I would never again be able to buy another watercolor for a price that was less than absurd.

Now it's back to buying comic art, even if the prices for much of it are even more absurd these days! Art markets rarely stay at inflated levels for too long, sometimes not even for more than a couple of days!
