Description

In this, my latest contribution to my Grummett X-Men Forever series art, we find Cyclops and Jean in a comforting embrace. This, after Cyclops' brother Alex, aka Lord Havok, perished in this final issue of the series. This embrace is actually show on the last page of the story, as Jean tells Scott "Whatever direction life takes us--to whatever destination--we'll ALL of us be X-Men forever!". Awww, how good and cheesy!

Now, as to why Jean is also shown as Phoenix in the background, coming through the door and being startled at the sight of herself and Scott embracing, don't ask. I have no idea why, and I read the series! But hey, I've always loved Jean/Marvel Girl/Phoenix and the love triangles between her, Scott, Logan and Hank(remember that one?), so I love the embrace and I frankly also love that Phoenix is also there, staring on in surprise. Could it be a portrayal of the Phoenix Force completely growing into its own entity, attached but mentally separate from Jean, with jealousy raging because it wants only to ever be attached to Jean as the host and doesn't like the idea of seeing its host body in the arms of anyone else? That would certainly tie in with the portrayal of Jean and the Phoenix Force on the lovely Bilquis Evely cover to Phoenix Resurrection #1, in Marcus Wai's gallery! Am I onto something here?

Anyway, you know I love me some Grummett, and I have to say that Hennessy filled in really well here on the inks, as he kept closer to Grummett's style than Hamscher typically did.

Beautiful cover!  And yeah, this is the kind of tableau that lends itself to all kinds of possible stories and interpretations.  Phoenix Jean bursting in on regular Jean and Scott?  I tried to come up with my own explanation, but yours is just too good.

This is a big score with Grummett on X-Men and that great team dynamic where the leader of the team is torn between his long time love and someone new who looks like a mirage of the long time love.  I've never seen that from him before.

I think that's Polaris he's embracing.

I thought of that too, Derek, but Polaris' hair is almost completely straight in this issue, while the waviness of her hair on this cover matches Jean's in the story. Plus, this embrace is almost identical to the one of the final page of the story. Still, it could've been a "lost in translation" moment with the instructions from editor to artist and a mistake on either the editor's part or Grummett's part. I guess we'll never really know for certain, but it's okay because I love the mystery of it all!

Come to think of it though, this confusion could very well be the reason they decided to ask Grummett to draw a different cover!

I was thinking the same thing about confusion, but I suppose if colored, there would be little to no confusion.

My thought was Cyclops spends most of the issue hugging Polaris as Havok has just died. Also those wrist cuff things don't look like anything this Jean/Phoenix ever wore and look more like the yellow gloves with cuffs that Polaris wore.

Didn't consider the hair styles though.

Great romance cover by Grummett (except for you know, the Phoenix effect and the visor?).

"How can cheat on me with that hussy?!?!" Like sands through an hourglass, these are the Days of Our Future Past Lives. The Phoenix Force is playing the part of the gun. ;) And, no, I completely forgot about Hank...Hank? Marvel loves their love triangles. Very cool Grummett X-cover, Rubén. Congrats!

"I have no idea why, and I read the series!"  LOL!  Hey, looks cool, right?!  When it comes to OA that's tops, man!  Great image too and indicative of the...oft troubled couple that is Scott and Jean.  But they always get through it, don't they?!  And I can see your rationale on Phoenix in the background - "alright, break it up, folks." :)  Congrats, Ruben!

Who does not love a mystery? Scotts a serial cheater on Jean. The anguish of Uncanny X-men 137 was soon lost with various women. No wonder Jean looks pissed. She should have vaporised him years ago. Lol. This is him feeling guilty.  Hes another angsty super guy. Its a what if cover! Mystery solved.
