DescriptionOctober 17, 1989. It was a Tuesday evening and although I was at work, I was eagerly awaiting the start of Game 3 of the 1989 World Series between our two hometown teams, the SF GIants and Oakland A’s. I was lucky enough to be the Supervisor of the electronics department, which of course meant having a TV on and already watching the pre-game broadcast. At 5:04 local time, the ground shook.....violently. I have no idea how long it lasted. Counting the seconds was certainly the last thing on my mind. When the shaking stopped, my first instinct was to call my parents to see if they were okay. Luckily, they were unharmed and the house was undamaged. Unfortunately, the same thing could not be said for other parts of the Bay Area. The SF/Oakland Bay Bridge nearly broke in half. In SF entire houses collapsed and fires sprung up all over the city. In Oakland, the entire upper deck of the Cypress Freeway collapse onto the lower deck crushing every car that had the misfortune of being on it at that fateful moment. The images I saw on the News were horrific. I live about 2 minutes from the Cypress, and I’ve driven that section of the freeway a thousand times. So when I say this happened in my back yard, it’s not much of an exaggeration. In fact, the next day, my friend and I decided to visit the site of the collapse. Not sure why. Maybe the devastating News images were too horrible to believe. Maybe we had to see it with our own eyes. We could only get so close by car, so we walked the rest of the way. That’s when I realized that it wasn’t as bad as what I had seen on TV. It was so much worse. I won’t bother to describe what I saw and heard that day. I will say only that, as I stood there, I could not imagine seeing anything else in my lifetime that would come close to matching the gruesome carnage of this tragic event.

Beautifully written, Eric, with a powerful message at the end. Sadly, we face tragedies all the time as a country, and we're good at coming together during those times thanks to that humanity -- I wish we could be more united as a country on a daily basis.
