Artwork Details

DescriptionIt is hard to believe that this is my first Joe Jusko artwork after so many decades of collecting. It is the latest in a series of his recreations of classic Marvel Corner Boxes. This one was painted exclusively for ComicLink. I have seen many of his renditions in this genre (including those of the same character as this, Daredevil), but this just struck a deep chord in me as soon as I saw it. I cannot quite put my finger on it. It is after the late great Bill Everett but is clearly Joe Juskofs own style. The colors also just blend marvellously together. I guess it is the organic nature of the entire piece. Quite by accident, though, I learnt of comments that I had overpaid. As original art is one-of-a-kind, such comparisons are in fact difficult to make (even character for character by the same artist, and even in the same series). Even then, I am prepared to say that I did indeed overpay but it was (and is) worth every penny to me. There were obviously others who wanted this piece as well and hence the price was bid up. Indeed, these comments were similar to those made of a piece of artwork I obtained a few years ago. The observations I made then are equally applicable now and I can do no better than reproduce them here (with the necessary modifications):I know that the general consensus (which, by the way, is absolutely correct) is that this piece went way, way over market value. But, very, very rarely, there is a piece which just catches one's eye and I will have to live with this "madness" (and the accompanying financial deficit). But it is a really gorgeous piece. Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder. And we should just leave it at that. Original art is not merely about money or who has the bragging rights. There is much in this hobby that is beginning to turn many (including myself) off, and I debated long and hard about whether to place this in my gallery (and be accused of the stupidity that is, I freely confess, so evident). But, in the end, I decided that we should never lose (or, rather, compromise) our own sense of wonder - experienced during an age of relative innocence that now seems to have occurred so very long ago; and it would also have been so churlish to have simply hidden this piece away in my collection and not share it. It's a really great piece, melding a figure pose from the 1960's with the contemporary colors and textures of today! As for the cost, is it truly considered "overpaying" if multiple parties were all willing to pay an amount within that same range? In any case, this is a perfect example of what veteran collectors should always do: Learn and understand what any given piece, at any given time, is worth to YOU. If you were willing to pay whatever price you paid, then it was worth it.

Pretty awesome with the colors that match the original Silver age issue. Jusko's attention to detail for the lighting are great choices. Daredevil is shown more dark and mysterious than just a shiny beacon on the top left of the comic.

This is a fantastic rendering of Daredevil in his original yellow costume. I love the green background Joe chose.
I don't know what you paid. But it was worth it!
I'm sorry that some felt the need to say you overpaid. The price of art is so subjective.
You didn't overpay; the heart wants what the heart wants.
Maybe this helps put pricing in perspective. To a homeless person, any amount paid for comic book art is overpaying. You can say the same about a lot of things people buy. This is my two cents.
I am so glad you added this piece to your amazing gallery! Thank you.

Many thanks, William, for your very perceptive and astute observations. Having been in the hobby for some time now, I have learnt not to let too much "noise" bother me as some views may also be borne out of less than noble intentions. Thanks again for your kind and encouraging words.
