DescriptionIt’s already been one year since I’ve posted a new Hamner piece so I thought it was time. He remains one of my fav’ artist for the always-great art and storytelling. This is card 100 in the Gen 13 card set. I have a fondness for 90s Wildstorm art (my own fav’ stable of characters from Image which offered IMHO the best written stories) and trading cards also commands a lot of nostalgia as I LOVED those sets that featured new art, commissioned especially for them. Here we have Freefall displaying her powers against the Keeper (?). I think Cully really captured her gravity powers and her personality well, giving us a sense of joyful chaos. She is having fun. They are not. The tilted angle Cully used and the two guys hanging in the air that we only get to see parts really add to that sense of inside a space shuttle environment. The cool reverse of the card head piece is a nice little bonus as it’s not always easy to get both pieces and thus the “full card” in terms of OA. As always with the Gaijin studio guys, the inks are pristine and you can hardly find any visible drop on the piece. Social/Sharing |

Great piece of card art there, buddy! I love the Wildstorm trading cards and Cully always did nice work on those. Congrats on the score!

I never got into the art of most of the Gaijin Studios guys, including Hamner, but the style here on this card doesn't look like the typical Hamner art I saw over the years. In fact, the line work, especially on the hands of the 2 foreground figures, reminds me of Tony Harris' work, which is interesting. I also enjoy seeing card art, it's always fun and an interesting subset of the original art hobby.

This was indeed a transitional period in Cully’s art from the looser GL Mosaic art to the stylized line heavy style he is using nowadays.
Tony Harris was a Gaijin studio member at some point so the similarities make sense.

Cool Roxy piece from when the comics boom of the 90's extended to card collecting and collided for an extravanganza of marketing.

It's Hamner time! (So sorry, I just couldn't control myself) I liked Gen13, too. It was a series I shared with my dad, so I get that nostalgia feeling, too. That angle is a great choice. As you said, it ramps up the spaceship vibe a lot, and even looks like a porthole view, imo. And the strong light source and drop shadow from another angle just widens out the image scope, creating great depth and perspective. Some nice tricks and choices by Hamner here. Congrats!
