Description

Yes, this page is from the 3rd story arc of the series titled "Sabretooth: Round Two", just like the one I posted two days ago, and yes, I'm aware that neither the title character nor the primary guest star are on the page. But while I'm a character collector as much as anyone else, I also love collecting pages that are nice examples of a particular artist's strengths.

With this page, not only do I get Perkins' standard chiaroscuro treatment, but it is also an excellent example of one of his other strengths, which is creating beautiful and realistic facial expressions and body language. You can read the dialogue to find out what's going on here in the additional image of the published page in the comic that I've included up above, but the gist of it is that the series main antagonist, Choshin, had hired Constrictor to steal The Book of Iron Fist for him at the princely sum of a million bucks, and now that Constrictor has secured the book, he smugly decides he may as well go back on his agreement with Choshin and tell him it'll now cost two million. Choshin, not wanting to waste any of his time with Constrictor's nonsense, nonchalantly sics the Rat of Twelve Plagues on him with instructions to make sure Constrictor reveals the location of the book to him before he proceeds to infect him with the plague. Of course, the reason Constrictor still looks smugly confident in the final two panels is because he didn't show up alone, but rather had the rest of the members of the new Serpent Society waiting for his signal, which is the finger snap in the last panel.

I also love the symmetrical panel composition, as it allows for very clear storytelling and really makes it easy for the viewer to focus in on the body language and movement from one panel to the next.

I love artists like Mike that lay down the heavy blacks! That third panel is especially impressive.

Miki, I know this is going to come as a shock to you, so you might want to be seated for this, but I ALSO love artists like Mike that lay down the heavy blacks!

Man, that look in panel 3...yikes! I'm with you on collecting characters as much as art. You should see my figure collection. It's all randos from top to bottom. :) Perkins is solid for all the reasons you laid out, and I'm sold. I mean, he did a wash just to have a soft, dungeony light source in the backgrounds. The effort he puts into small details is a pleasure to see. Another great Perkins page, as you do. Congrats!

AH!  I get it now!  I am totally lame, and (embarrasingly) I've never really picked up on the fact that the multiple chest and hood patterns on Constrictor's costume are supposed to be, y'know, SNAKE scales.  I always thought they were supposed to represent the segmented coils of his "strangle tendrils" (or whatever they're called), which I thought was... odd.  Ugh.  I blame the fact that I first saw Contrictor in Incredible Hulk #212 when I was a kid (and thought the "wrist lassos" were awesome), and obviously have never "re-processed" the image since then.  Now, seeing this (and how Mr. Perkins illustrates the costume with the more defined musculature) it makes perfect sense.  So, yeah, sure - awesome composition, brilliant inking, pointy teeth (!!), yadda, yadda...  but, hey!!  Snake costume!!  Check!!

Ha ha ha ha ha! I have to give you props though, Jason, because you could easily have just kept the embarassment to yourself, but you put it all out here for all of us to read, and why not? It's hilarious! But hey, the same thing has happened to me in the past, more than once. You spend decades of your life either mispronouncing a name or not understanding the name, or as in this case, a costume, then one day it all suddenly clicks and you're like "OHHHHHH, THAT'S why it's like that! Now it finally all makes sense!". 😅

By the way, 2 years before I ever bought my own comic book and before I became a reader/collector, I was given a pile of comics by my neighbour who would buy them at corner stores, read and then discard them. One of them was Powerman and Iron Fist #66, the 2nd appearance of Sabretooth which immediately made me fall in love with him (as well as the Gammill art) and he was partnered with the Constrictor, who I also immediately fell in love with. Around 20 years ago when the focus of my collecting was the best Hulk covers and splashes from Hulk #200 onwards, I acquired the original cover to Hulk #212, with those great Chan inks. I later sold the collection off, but it was a thrill to own that cover as long as I did!

Totally!  True story, I had a friend who mispronounced Dinah Lance's alter ego as "Black Cannery", and by the time I was able to figure out who he was talking about ("who the heck is Black Cannery...?"), months later, it was almost too late to correct him...  A well-read individual, to be sure, but (like you say) sometimes we just all have a misfire. :)

And that is SO cool that you owned the Hulk 212 cover at one point.  That was one of my favorites as a kid!

You don't know Black Cannery?!? That was Dinah's alter ego for the short period where she moved to that fishing village and took a job  at the local cannery! 😆  Too funny. In keeping with the Sabretooth connection, I had my own brain fart which lasted 36 years. A visual one though. I was 10 years old when I was given a copy of PMIF #66 and immediately loved Sabretooth. From that story onward, I always thought he was some sort of animal human hybrid. In other words, I thought the way he looked was his actual body. So when he began being portrayed wearing the early 90's costume over a decade later, I kept wondering why Marvel chose to do that, given how cool he already looked. It wasn't until Perkins launched this Iron Fist series and the first issue of the storyline this page is from came out that a friend of mine cleared up my confusion and revealed to me that the way Sabretooth looked from the start was all a costume. I thought the tuft of fur around the neck/shoulders and coming out of the wrists and top of the boots was growing naturally out of his body! I can't tell you how disappointed I've been ever since....

You guys!  I LOVE your back and forth.  Black Cannery.  Thinking Sabretooth's tufty costume bits were part of his body.  We have all definitely been there.  I do that kind of thing more with song lyrics.  I'll sing the wrong ones for years.  Like "After the poison summer has gone" instead of "After the boys of summer have gone" for the Don Henley tune.  Reminds me of Phoebe Buffet on "Friends" thinking that the Elton John song goes "Hold me closer, Tony Danza."  Anyway, love this page.  Such great close-ups, facial expressions, body language ... As Marcus Wai pointed out, you just want to punch the Constrictor for being so smug.

"After the poison summer has gone" ?!? Ha ha ha! Come on, Paul, you can't be serious! But yes, it happens to the best of us. What about the fact that MANY people (myself included) often think that "Danke Schoen" is sung by a random, no-name female artist in her 40's, rather than the, at the time, 21 year old Wayne Newton!

Well sure, I know why I and others thought so. But you're a musician yourself, so I thought you for sure had even played and sung that song many times youself, let alone been one of the few who knew it was by Wayne Newton!😅

Yeah, no, I have never sang it or accompanied anyone singing it.  I've just been a general listener/enjoyer like everyone else.  In fact, I always thought part of the humor of Ferris Bueller singing it in that movie was that it was originally sung by a woman.  And now that whole scene is ruined for me.  RUINED!!!  That is, until I forget we had this conversation, and then all will be well in my blissfully ignorant world.

Huh?  What's awesome?  I can't remember what we were talking about, but I have this strange desire to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  I love that scene towards the end when he sings that song "Danke Schoen."  It's funny because it was originally sung by a woman.  Hahaha!  Love that movie.

Constrictor is not so smart, now he has to split whatever money he was going to get with Peter, Paul, and Mary.  Perkins does a great job at wanting us to punch this guy out in every panel he's in or about to be in.

Love pages like this with so many different facial emotions. And yes, the heavy blacks really make the page pop and I am a fan as well. Great stuff - congrats and thanks for sharing!

Hi.  I heard this is the comment thread where people come to confess that they thought for years that "Danke Schoen" was sung by a woman.  Am I in the right place?  While I'm here, let me say that's one helluva good depiction of the Constrictor.

😅 Yes! You've come to the right place, Michael, DSA: "Danke Schoen Anonymous"! The Constrictor thanks you.

The storytelling is so good here with those facial expressions from the Constrictor.  His snarkiness is evident!  And Perkins toes the line well between a traditional cartoony comic look vs a more realistic approach.  Congrats!
