DescriptionThis is one of the most significant pages from an extremely significant issue. Entitled "The Origin of the Howlers!", it is just that. We learn - through Sawyer's reminiscences in the wake of the capture of the rest of the Howling Commandos who are now (with the exception of Nick Fury) incarcerated in Greece - how Sawyer and Fury met. The latter, Fury, was a civilian in the first instance - a parachute instructor (together with his closest friend, Red Hargrove, who is the pilot), hired to train commandos in the British army. Sawyer, an American lieutenant then in the British army, meets them both and "enlists" them (albeit as civilians) for an important mission. We also get to know how Fury and Dum Dum met at a circus (Dum Dum being the circus strongman). Suffice it to say that the mission is a success, with Nick Fury and Red Hargrove subsequently enlisting in the US Army. Unfortunately, Red is killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Dum Dum also enlists. Sawyer is tasked to form an elite squad of US rangers or commandos. And this is the historic page when they are all gathered for the very first time. Sadly, Junior Juniper is later killed in action. His place is taken by Percy Pinkerton but that is another story for another time. As Sawyer ends his remiscences, word comes in that the Howlers have been transferred to Berlin. The story ends with Sawyer and Fury determined to free them. Social/Sharing |

This is an origin revealing roll call page as important as any super team in Marvel's stable. Great exposition for their personal backgrounds added as well. Ayers places us right into the scene along the bottom tier as these faces and characters will take us along for this tour of duty.
