DescriptionThis is a fondly remembered issue. For the very first time, the origin of the Howlers is told in flashback. Call me nostalgic (or even excessively nostalgic), but this is a story that hits home because of its very personal element (I loved it from the very first time I read this particular issue). And this particular page is special in its own way - the first meeting between Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan, and the beginning of (a la Casablanca) a beautiful friendship that would last through World War Two and beyond. The dialog is classic - and destined to set the tone for many of their subsequent exchanges together (especially Fury's reference to Dum Dum's mustache and, hence, his reference to the latter as an old walrus!).Social/Sharing |

From the last truck I saw you, working outta my mind
Oh, I never believed in friends at first sight
But you got a comic boy, that I just can't explain
Well gorilla, gorilla way that you makin' me feel
I can do, I can do anything for you, Fury
I'll be Dum Dum, Nick Fury
Post all my art out tonight
Just call on me Fury
I'll be there in a hurry
It's your move Nick Fury, Fury with eyes
Dick Ayers who draws this meet
He's giving you everything
I'm a Dum Dum tonight
You've given me history
In this war fantasy
Help Nick Fury tonight

In this war fantasy
Help Nick Fury tonight
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought I saw the fury rise in your eyes
Indeed the moon and the stars were the gifts your fists gave
But we became friends, with our bond forevermore
We became friends, with our bond forevermore
(With sincere apologies to Roberta Flack)

Since you requested it, I just want to take this opportunity to call you nostalgic! It is indeed a very fun page with very fun dialogue and FUN is what I seek from the hobby now, so this is a perfect page. Oh, the Roberta flack song is a classic and you've done it justice!

Many thanks, Rubén! Yes, the way this hobby has been veering towards more and more talk about increased (and increasing) dollar values, the less fun it has become. This is a timely reminder of what the hobby is actually about.

AWESOME page, CAB: historically important both personally and, well, historically! Man, it is -SHAMELESS- how Nick and Dum Dum flirt, but reading Silver Age reprints certainly gives the feeling that something important and new was happening every issue - and the proof is right here. (We know that Nick's "infinity formula" - is that what it's called? - is what keeps him young and vital after all this time: he must have shared with Dum Dum...?) Another great add, CAB! Congrats!

Thanks so very much, Jason! It is a very historic page indeed but, as mentioned, it is the personal nostalgic pull of this page which overrides all else.

Many thanks, Mikail! As always, the strands of history influence as well as stretch into the future, and so it is with Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan and Shield.

Many thanks, Ken! It is OT, but what a fantastic Cap splash page you have in your CAF Gallery. I look forward very much to more postings.

Great page from the time of the Big Bang of the Marvel Universe. Everything and every story line had gems like this. Excellent.

Many thanks, Ron! This issue had it all. I was also fortunate enough to obtain the page when all the Howlers are first introduced (together with Junior Juniper who was to die tragically later, to be replaced by Percy Pinkerton).

Thanks very much, Rick! As usual, a totally succinct - but deadly accurate description!

Feast your Flappin eyeballs on this piece. What a fun panel with them getting in each others face in that last panel. Love it.

Many thanks, Ian! This is just a realy nice piece of history and the last panel set the tone for all their banter throughout this series.
