Description

In November 1999, I was fortunate to be able to arrange for a commission from Gil Kane (thanks to Frank Giella for arranging it). I chose Flash Gordon and Dale Arden as I was creating a collection of Flash Gordon art at the time. (For a variety of reasons, I gave up on that collecting theme and sold most of my Flash Gordon art, although I still have a few pieces left.)

Unfortunately, Gil's health was fading at the time and you can see some shakiness in the pencil lines. In spite of that, he was still able to create a dramatic image. Sadly, Gil passed away shortly after I received the art in January 2000, and this is probably one of the last pieces that he ever worked on.

A few years later, I got an inked version of this drawing from Dan Adkins (inked via lightbox, so both pieces exist separately).

I find it absolutely amazing what Kane was still doing into his 70s, and this is a perfect example, congrats!
