DescriptionLove and Rockets and Jaime Hernandez's "Locas" characters have been a collecting focus since I joined CAF and I’ve been lucky to acquire several pages over the past year. What can I say? I've been with the series for over 30 years now. Can't stop, won't stop. I'm hooked for life.Lately, however, I've been branching out and requesting commissions from artists whose work I really enjoy. I contacted Yo Kuri after seeing some of the pieces he regularly posts on Instagram (IG: yokuri72art). He's a stylistic chameleon who can capture the essence of any character he's rendering (like Guts from Berserk or James Harren's Ultramega characters) but who also brings his own unique style and flourishes. I hesitated at first in asking YK to consider a Love and Rockets commission but I was generally interested in seeing him do an homage to an iconic cover like the one from issue #24. This was when Jaime’s work on Love and Rockets began to focus more on Hoppers and the punk milieu and less on the spaceships and sci-fi trappings of the earlier issues. YK had the inspired idea to do a riff on the #24 cover (see attached image) but through the sci-fi lens of those earlier issues. Frankly, the end result was stunning. Rather than Terry Downe and Hopey, we see two aliens rocking out in front of Maggie and Rand Race with a lovingly rendered spaceship in the background. I was stunned when I received the final product. Both a worthy tribute and a piece that stands on its own as a compelling work of art. Please don't hesitate to reach out to YK. He was super client-focused at every step, shared his process throughout, and consulted on the best approach to the subject. A super talented artist and a gem to deal with. Beauty of a tribute to the original! The 50's sci-fi vs the 80's indie contrasts are varied and surprising because they were 50's books trying to look futuristic and the 80's indie book looking like classic prehero storytelling. Alien textures and organic shapes as opposed to the shadows and cool crisp manmade lines. The 4 aliens on the bottom left representing the classic EC cover designs that have a strip on the left edge. The space ship in place of the microphone is also a nice touch. Kuri makes the elements all intersect on this cover and causes an expoenential chain reaction of delight!

Yo is one of the nicest guys in the hobby and his art is top notch. This piece is a great tribute but also showcases Yo's storytelling and creative talents. Huge congrats!

Yo Kuri's forte is a strong graphic sensibility, particularly in black and white, so he was an excellent choice for a commission based on L&R, which has always traded predominantly in B&W and in contrasts for its visual impact. I love the alien rockers, and the concept is delightful, as are the "pseudo hosts" at left. Congrats on a great commission.

Wow! What a cool riff on the Love and Rockets comic by Yo Kuri! This is a toitally out-there commission that isn't like anything I'd expect from Love and Rockets! So here you've got crazy looking alien rockers jamming on rhe moonj while the human cast of Love and Rockets is wearing glass helmeted spacesuits down the mosh pit. Above the rockers, an enormous city-sized spacecraft is slowly moving past the earth, partially blocking it out. The whole scene is apparently a cover photo on a magazine called "Mechanics" and subtitled "Recommended For Immature Readers." Crazy cool commission by the amazing Yo Kuri!
