Description11 x 17 Locas commission by Ethan Young inspired by the original poster by Jaime Hernandez.Left to right: Ray Dominguez, Maggie Chascarillo, Hopey Glass, unknown character, Terry Downe, Daphne “Daffy” Matsumoto Closing out my 2023 collecting year with a few things I've been too busy to post.... When it comes to my OA preferences, I prefer when the original artist draws the characters they’ve created or are most famous for. So even though dozens of artists have drawn Jaime’s Locas characters for fun, it’s always Jaime’s versions that stick in my mind and why I have so much of his art in my collection. That said, I knew Ethan Young could do this commission justice when I proposed the idea. I’ve seen various commissions by him posted to CAF and Instagram and his style seamlessly blends cartoony-ness with realism—a stylistic blend that I admire so much in Jaime’s work. This commission is based on a gigantic Love and Rockets/Locas poster offered by Fantagraphics in the late ‘80s, arguably the time of the series’ greatest prominence. I owned it at the time and recently reacquired a copy (see additional image). I consider it one of the best character line-up pieces Jaime has ever done and it’s an image that has stuck with me for decades. What are they staring at? Why is Hopey grinning like a mischievous demon and Daffy so petrified? Meanwhile, Izzy looks like she’s ready to throw down. While I’d love to own the original art for the poster, that seems highly unlikely. This piece by Young serves as an effective homage and companion to the original poster and it’s clear Young added his own touches. The angle is skewed slightly more than the original and the characters seem more multi-ethnic than in the original. I also never knew who the character with the hat on was but I think I prefer Young’s version to Jaime. All in all, grateful to have this piece. Social/Sharing |

Nice. Never saw this. Love the angle as well as Ethan's takes on the characters.

Wow, so nice! I've never heard of the artist, but he absolutely is a perfect choice to handle these iconic characters. Congratulation on a 100% successful commission, Mark!

Young did a bang-up job on this L&R homage! Now that you've got this beauty on your wall, I'm sure the original original will show up at auction, and I bet you'll decide to keep them both.

Young's version is different enough that you can enjoy both. He does adopt a lot of techniques that Jaime was doing in the original, but makes the facial expressons his own. Otherwise, a recreation could have just been done by lightbox which would have any of the soul in it.

Nice commission redo and great idea. You should stick to the theme and commission artists who are good at acting and facial expressions to redo it (Paul Smith, Alan Davis, Kevin Maguire...).

Interesting suggestion, although I think this is more of a one-off. But if I were to do it again, Maguire seems a natural fit to me but Smith is the most compelling suggestion. He has that consistent balance/tension between cartoony-ness and realism that lends itself to the subject matter. I know people love his X-Men art but Leave it to Chance is, for me, a high-water mark.

Beautiful commission by Ethan Young. He really captures much of the feel of the original poster while still making it his own. It's nice that he didn't simply copy the original, he made it new again.
