Description
Cover dated November 1994.

Near the tail end of Mark Gruenwald’s very long run on Captain America, he and artist Dave Hoover brought in Baroness Zemo, who may or may not have had the brainwaves of Baron Heinrich Zemo. Baron Heinrich Zemo’s son, Baron Helmut Zemo, decided that the logical thing to do when you meet a woman who may have your dead father’s brainwaves is to put a ring on it and then adopt 25 children with her who you brainwash to hate Captain America. Typical stuff for Barons from what I understand. I hope that Disney+ turns it into a series. After all, many people thought Zemo was the best part of “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” “The Zemo Bunch” would certainly be a hit.

We also met a daring new ally for Captain America at this time, Free Spirit. No need to delve into her origins here because all comic book fans know and love Free Spirit. Cap certainly needed new allies at this time because he was starting to physically fall apart. This would ultimately lead to the most popular incarnation of Captain America next to Wolf Cap, namely Armored Cap. At the time of this issue, Cap is wearing an interim protective suit covered in pouches. Why did Cap need so many pouches? To hold his suntan lotion and snacks (I assume).

So, here we have a page with Baroness Zemo, Free Spirit and Pouch Cap. It’s my seventh favorite page in my original art collection.

Beware the Kinder!

Also, if you love someone, you will dive into a molten pit of Adhesive X after they do.

Such a nice looking page. The inks really worked on Hoover's run! Bravo!

A Turkish delight of a page, Baroness Zemo dances across this page.  And Caps pouches?  They are marked M T W Th F Sa and Su.  You don't want to miss a day or take double the Meds by mistake.  All those side effects are not going to be pretty for Free Spirit to clean up in the laundry.

Terrific page. I always liked Hoover's art from the moment I saw it on DC's Wanderers maxi-series but he really took it to the next level after jumping to Marvel.

Side note: that plotline sounds bananas.

Mark Gruenwald wrote some really fun comics. But having stopped reading/collecting in the back half of 1993, I had no clue he was still writing Cap at this point, and more specifically, had taken to writing it in a slap stick style where even mudering villains like Baron Zemo had witty little back and forths with his henchman. How Bizarre....

You got me to watch the entire OMC music video for the first time since the 1990s.  And now I have the song stuck in my head.  How Bizarre indeed.

I should hope so! Do you think I go to the trouble of linking up music videos in my comments only so the art owner can get a little chuckle at the title of the songs? My whole point is to HOPEFULLY get people to either relive a blast from the past, or be introduced to it if they aren't already familiar with it! This one is so chill and relaxing. Classic!  😎

There's a reason why a lot of royal family trees are nearly a straight line...90s nostalgia shotgun blast! I enjoyed the Hoover Bulandi run on Cap. They made some gritty stories, and the pencils and inks look really nice together. I'm never going to complain about fully inked backgrounds. Cool find. Congrats!

Hoover Cap for the win! Love this page and love that you have it ranked at #7. IS your entire collection ranked? Congrats, thanks for sharing!

It's a very informal ranking system that changes based on how much caffeine is in my system at the given moment.  🙃

when i was brand new into comic art collecting. i wanted a Cap page from the ongoing series but i thought it would be too far out of my wheel house, so i got a off shoot Cap book page instead. this page really does encompass eveything special about his series. the action is there, the drama is thick, and Hoover really did a great job of illustrating every character with momentium and direction. its a great page. congrats
