Ooh, I was excited to find this one! This is an original strip from 1953 by Ed Dodd and Tom Hill about the whitetail deer, who is rampant where I live, so it feels like this piece belongs here. It's technically 2 separate pages which fit together, and boy are they huge! The entire piece together is 23" x 29" of gorgeous detail. There is some foxing on the bottom half and yellowing of the glue where there is a publisher's stat sticker of the title, but for a piece from the 50s, maybe it isn't too bad... the original art for these strips are not very easy to find, but I have recently found some originals (in addition to a slew of line art & some color proofs!) from James Allen, who was an artist on the strip from 2014-2020, so I will be posting those as they come in.

I am doing some research to find out the art credits on this work since Ed Dodd took credit solely for some of these, even though they worked in an "assembly line" style process once he had hired some additional artists. Barbara Chen was the uncredited letterer on all of the strips until technology allowed for the Mark Trail font to be created.

Pretty cool nature strip in this Sunday format. It rivals some of the World of Disney nature strips with a less cartoony look. The strength of this art supports a pillar in this genre of the artform.
