Description

This is an original strip of "Mark Trail's Outdoor Tips," which ran through Post-Hall Syndicate in newspapers and magazines from 1946 to 1987 and then through King Features Syndicate from 1987 through 2020.

This original strip is approx. 5 5/8" x 13 1/2" with the title and copyright notice as sticker stats, but all else (including lettering and signature/date) are original.

On October 12, 2020 (coincidentally, my birthday), webcomic creator Jules Rivera (Love, Joolz) became the first Latinx female illustrator to take on the Mark Trail legacy. She has updated the visual style and dialogue of the strip, and her changes have been met with mixed response from the "Trailheads" who have been longtime fans. While I personally adore the more realistic style of the classic Mark Trail artwork, I do appreciate the way Rivera's changes make the strip accessible to new generations of environment and comics lovers.

Over the decades this strip has received over 30 conservation awards from private and government organizations, spawned publication of books, coloring books, magazines, and comic books published by Fawcett Publications and Standard/Nedor/Pines. There was a Mark Trail radio adaptation of 30-minute episodes which aired from 1950-1951 and a radio adaptation of 15-minute episodes which aired from 1951-1952. Apparently few of the 15-minute eps. survived. There was additionally "Mark Trail Radio Theatre" which aired from 1991-2002 on Minneapolis-St. Paul public radio station KFAI.

In 1991 Congress deemed 16,400 acres of forest along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia to be designated the Mark Trail Wilderness.

Great piece just for the illustrative value of the image! It has appeal to naturalists and for horror fans!
