DescriptionDoc Stearn...Mr. Monster #5 p1 (1986) Michael T Gilbert "The Invaders from Mars?" (I believe this is comic page#21 being the title splash to one of the stories in the issue)With the rising cost of original artwork low-end feeders like myself need to open our eyes and be more creative. Recently I've been trying to pick up some examples from the 'Independent Age" of the 1980's. Prior to the black & white explosion of that era a number of companies challenged the big two and gave some talented creators the opportunity to showcase their work. I fondly remember this series from Eclipse Comics with its macabre and unique art style by Michael T Gilbert. It really stood out as special and different. I was thrilled to recently win this title splash on eBay from the first series prominently featuring Mr. Monster - love the chaos he is witnessing before entering the fray, big gun in hand ready, including the classic babe in peril which I assume is his gal Friday, Kelly Friday. Odd page size measuring 14"x17". Use of white-out as part of the creative process and some paste-on correction with original artwork on it above the lettering on the babe. Social/Sharing |

Gilbert's retro styled monster stories had touches of pre hero and some pre code monster stories. His vision was pure and he had lots of friends / fans that contributed writing and art like Alan Moore, Bissette, Dave Stevens. Etc. because they believed in this too. This early era issue has all that indie spirit and high quality art Gilbert was pouring into the work at Eclipse.

I've only recently discovered the loopy joys of this bizarre series (I know, I know, and only about 40 years late!). This would be a much less desirable original if it'd been printed today, because it wouldn't have Ken. B.'s inspired lettering all over it, which is such an integral part of Michael Gilbert's vision for the character and concept. This is a great, great Doc Stearn splash, with all the deliciously deviant details that MTG splashes are infamous for, and that great, looming figure of the Doc himself lording over it al! I dig this. Congrats! :-D

So true about Ken Bruzenak's lettering adding to the tone. I've edited the credit description to properly include him.

Coolest Doc around. Mr Monster! I was a huge fan of this series, and have a few cool prelims I got from Mr Gilbert at SDCC. Very cool guy, and what great art. Golden Age horror lives on here. And that lettering just gilds the lily. Great find. Monstrous congrats!
