DescriptionIt would certainly appear that I have a thing for Paul Pope as of late...which is true. This is a spectacular half+ splash from Batman: Year 100, Paul Pope's 2006 Eisner Award winning (Best Limited Series and Best Writer/Artist), four-issue mini-series set in the dystopian future of Gotham in 2039...100 years after the first Batman sighting in 1939. While certainly non-canonical, the story is a fascinating sci-fi encapsulation of the complete history of the character (including the non-canonical Dark Knight Returns) and archetypal representations of most key main characters (Alfred Pennyworth being a notable exception). We're never really sure if we're looking at THE Batman or someone who has put on the cowl to keep the symbol and legend alive...but that's part of the power of the story Pope tells. Speaking of Mr. Pope, per his representative Felix Lu, this was his favorite page from the book. He kept this on his wall for artistic inspiration and he picked this page to represent his work at the Society of Illustrators 'Illustrating Batman: Eighty Years of Comics and Pop Culture' exhibit in 2019. The exhibit presented original artwork from over 50 of the most accomplished and recognizable artists to work on the character. Paul only recently decided to part with the page and I feel incredibly fortunate to be its next steward. Thanks to Felix for the help in making it happen! Social/Sharing |

I don't think Larry Tun has enough praise for you in his entire heart. You are going to break him.

Phenomenal Paul Pope page! I love the top splash with Bats haging upside down (Like a bat, I might add). And that followed by the tight shots of the screw dropping from the vent and Batman peering out...The whole page is fabulous from layout to inks. Congratulations, Chris!

I can't imagine there is a better page in the book but I'll have fun re-reading it to find out...love the top panel, obviouslyl but the bottom sequence is excellent.

I'll join the chorus of praises (and jealousy???) to add what a great piece of art this is - that first panel is of course where it is all at, from the dominant figure of Bats in that great perspective, but also those storytelling beats in the subsequent panels. Congratulations on a massive pick up!

It's crazy how many people saw this on the YouTube show...and then wrote me why it wasn't in the drop. And then found out it was sold for a massive private offer. And now the mystery buyer has been revealed!
You paid up for it, yes...but still, very glad it's in your collection! Thanks for your friendship and all you've done for the Lu Family Fund!

'The mystery buyer'...that might be the coolest thing I've ever been called. My only consolation on the massive private offer is that the word 'massive' seems to be losing it's context in our hobby these days. Either way, I'm glad it's in my collection, too!
And as for the Lu Family Fund that supports Paltown? That, my friend, is one of the most important things I support - and always will be.

Great strength put into the the center vine of the page where everything branches off from! The Batman flower at the top is in full bloom.

It's a stunner! I was lucky enough to see it at the Society of Illustrators show and the scan doesn't do it justice. It's a dynamic example of inventive visual storytelling. Congrats!

Count on you to find an A+++ example from a book with a lot of strong pages. Woof!

Pope brought something new and distinct and special to the Dark Knight and, given how many artists have worked on this character and tried and failed to do exactly that....this is something truly special.. Pope on Batman is epic.

It’s really special when an artist sees inspiration in his own work. Normally a very self deprecating bunch. Killer page from what many consider Pope’s seminal work.

Hey, sincere congratulations!
Not only for the indisputable beauty of the page, but for having obtained a piece of one of the most beautiful Batman stories ever written.
When I read this story, I immediately thought of George Orwell's 1984 which is one of the best dystopian novels ever written.
Congratulations again!

Fantastic! What an amazing image that first panel is with enhanced perspective. Batman's arm is longer than his legs and it works perfectly. The dramatic splashy image followed by simple yet ingenious storytelling on the bottom takes this to a new level. No wonder it was kept and exhibitied as a high point in comic art.

Knowing the size of these pages, that top image must be utterly stunning in person. Cheers!

Wow. I'm hit or miss or Pope, but this is a BIG hit. Love that splashy figure up top. AND you got some great storytelling to boot. Some of the best types of pages. Congrats!
