DescriptionAs many fans know, John Buscema took over from Don Heck on the Avengers in 1967 beginning with issue #41. John had returned to Marvel after a long hiatus from comics working as a commercial artist. This page is affectionately known as the Avengers "tryout" page, most likely penciled before he started on the Avengers title. It is a character sheet showing the male Avengers featured in the title at the time, including Hercules, Captain America, Quicksilver, Hawkeye and Goliath. This page was printed in The Avengers Epic Collection Volume 3:Masters of Evil and previously in an issue of Roy Thomas' Alter Ego fanzine. I haven't been able to locate that particular issue of Alter Ego, but my internet research suggests that in the accompanying article he was proposed to pattern the likeness of the characters on various actors: Hercules=Steve Reeves;Quicksilver=Fred Astaire;Hawkeye=Anthony Quinn;Goliath= Robert Culp; Captain America= Burt Lancaster.I would really welcome comments from anyone who may have more insights on the provenance of this page. Amazing! It's just too bad they ddn't let John Buscema ink this himself!

I've seen it at a dealer's booth before. Very nice piece as the style did match Marvel of the time period.

Always thought this piece was very cool--basically from corner to corner it's filled with Buscema Avengers, love how big they are on the page. And while I don't always love Roussos as an inker, the inks are very solid here--and the inkwork on Hawkeye in particular is awesome. I bet if you contacted Roy Thomas (who I think can still be reached through Alter Ego), he would know the full story behind this.

Astaire, huh? No wonder Pietro always looked so much older than Wanda! I thought the artists just latched onto white hair = old. These are great and bring back great memories of that time!
