DescriptionSomeone said it was Superman's Birthday?Ed McGuinness drawing Superman and then Superman/Batman were comics that I really enjoyed and something I discovered after not reading for a while. I loved the cartoonish style that Ed brought to the characters, especially Superman. These issues caused my fondness for Ed's art that continues to this day and has me a big fan of his work. Finding pages from these early Superman books is not easy so I was thrilled when this popped up and I was able to purchase. A wonderful page with Superman and Lois flying that reminded me of the great scenes in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. I wouldn’t mind adding another Superman page from this time period, please feel free to share if you are aware of anything. Social/Sharing |

What a great page - Ed always does an amazing Superman. This really does hit that classic feel with Superman & Lois!

The last great DC crossover in my book. I loved the more cartoony style that McGuinness and Wieringo brought to Superman, and this is a fabulous representation of that fun period in the Superman titles.

Thanks Michael. I totally agree and was an instant fan of the art and immediately looking for anything Ed had drawn to pick up as well.

Cinematic and such a classic feel for a modern page. When are we getting the Hulk vs. Supes crossover movie? A Dave can dream!

Thanks Steve! I can dare to dream, that's for sure but I certainly hope that this would take place in the MCU. A DCU version would likely be a dark nightmare!

Really lovely page by the great Ed McGuinness. I especially like that second panel closeup of Lois's face. It's the kind of wide-eyed wonder that a character like Superman should bring to us all.

No dialogue from Superman, but he expresses everything needed by his presence. The backgrounds are fantastic with the black fill allowing for some tangents of the clouds and constellations flowing through all three levels. The sharp lines for Superman and Lois give it an animated look that was boldly counter to trends and stayed true to McGuiness' own style.

I was about to chastise you about no Hulk, but I see it's McGuinness, so carry on. ;) I dig that his style has always been recognizable, and fairly consistent. Not every artist can come out with such a distinctive abs great style right off the bat, without having to develop much over the years. And the inks by Smith are really good. That last panel is pure cinematic whimsy. Very nice. Congrats!

Thanks JH!
Chastise away my friend. I am getting the business over at FB from a few of my fellow gammabros, and deservedly so as I would probably do the same. Trying to put down the urge to smash every once and a while and pick up something from outside my lane. I will make amends with my next post, most assuredly.

I am still getting used to you posting non Hulk art. This is a great page. I actually never read this run but the art is amazing.

I really love all tender moments featuring Superman/Clark and Lois, so this is a great page for me. The image in the 1st panel is indeed very movie-esque and I'm a huge fan of closeups and extreme closeups, so the middle panel is great too. But let's face it, so is the 3rd panel! Beautiful black spotting across the entire page.

This is where McGuinness blew up, and not hard to see why! His more exaggerated, cartoony look for the character was just what the doctor ordered. He also doesn't get enough credit for his his storytelling. Great example, JG - congrats!
