Description"Bozo," a popular strip that ran from 1921 until creator Reardon's death in 1955, is known as the first wordless strip, or "pantomime strip." Not that "firsts" are all that importan, but I'm skeptical of the claim, though in the context of U.S. syndicated newspaper strips it may be valid. The strip also seems to have popularized the word/name "Bozo," and I wonder if its present-day obscurity is in part due to being overshadowed by the later "Bozo the Clown" of children's TV. Probably not, there are any number of popular strips that are forgotten today.At any rate, this example is cute and funny, a well-told gag with some fun background details in panel 3. And the always-welcome blue wash adding color to a black and white original. I'm intrigued by the pencil notation underneath: "gag man idea." Was Reardon making a note that he got the joke from a professional gag man? I've never seen a note like that on a strip before! Social/Sharing |

Pretty cool strip. Because they are different heights, Reardon keeps the level of the ring stable acoss all panels to make the gag work.
