The Eighth Immortal 1

This piece is very personal to me. It is the cover from the first creator owned comic series I wrote and produced. Source Point Press published the comic, written by me and drawn by Alice Li Barnes. Tiffany Turrill did all of the covers for the series, and brought so much beauty and vigor to the covers that I am forever grateful for her talents and contributions to the comic. After many discussions and emails about the story and the characters, Tiffany would read the scripts and then come up with several ideas for covers concepts. They were always so well thought out and done with such care.

The story of The Eighth Immortal revolves around Curipan, an ancient immortal woman who has the gift of being able to absorb the life force around her, somewhat similar to X-Men's Rogue. She is is tasked to use this power to hunt down other immortals when their immortality takes root in childhood and snuff it out, so that the world is not overrun by immortals and a demonic presence can not gain control of their power.

This cover shows Curipan embracing a young boy's face, covering his eyes and drawing the immortality from him. She cries because this task, though necessary, weighs on her soul. I love how Tiffany chose to frame Curipan's face, and the cover itself, with a wreath of leaves, symbolizing the eternal life force of the earth, with Curipan's individuality barely present, and the viewer only knowing her sadness. All of the magic, power, beauty and tragedy of the comic is represented simply and gracefully in this one image, which is why we chose this concept for the book's first cover.

My wife surprised me in Christmas 2021 by buying all of the original covers Tiffany did for the series and gifting them to me, instantly making them the pride of my collection.
