Description

New Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - and the third and last of my DC Comics Presents covers - issue #100, pairing Superman with Gary Concord, Ultra-Man, facing the threat of Per Degaton! Art by Bambos Georgiou, adapted from the Ron Frenz and Joe Sinnott cover to Thor #409.

Spring 1942 - and as Superman flies towards the Perisphere for a meeting of the All-Star Squadron, he's suddenly pulled forward through time to the 23rd century, courtesy of the temporal engines developed by scientists working for Gary Concord, the Ultra-Man, High Moderator Of the United States Of North America!

Concord tells Superman that he needs his aid in stopping the irreparable fracturing on the time-stream - Per Degaton, a villain from Superman's era, intends to change history by enabling the assassination of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933, shortly before his first inauguration, believing that by doing so, he'll not only stop FDR becoming President but also prevent the formation of the Justice Society, and pave the way for Degaton's triumph. However, Concord reveals that what will actually happen is that, if Degaton succeeds, by the late 1930s America will fall under the control of a dictator called Vandal Savage - who will keep the USA out of World War II but drag them into a much more serious conflict in 1950, which will kill a large percentage of the world's population!

Superman is initially sceptical, until Concord shows him history tapes from his own world's past, where this has happened - the future era of the Ultra-Man is that in which FDR was assassinated and Vandal Savage was almost responsible for the extinction of the human race. When Superman raises concerns that, by stopping the assassination, he'll wipe out Concord's entire timeline, the High Moderator assures him that the mighty temporal engines will secure his timeline - and any other alternate worlds which might have been created as a result of Degaton's meddling.

Convinced, Superman travels back in time to Miami on 15 February 1933, along with Gary Concord, where they find Degaton about to employ his agent - a master marksman called Floyd Lawton - in the assassination, taking advantage of the confusion caused by a failed attempt on FDR's life. At the last minute, Superman intercepts the bullet from Lawton's gun, saving Roosevelt, as the Ultra-Man captures Degaton!

As Concord starts the process of returning Superman to his own time, prior to resetting the timeline by causing Degaton to lose his memory once he's returned to 1947, the villain starts to rant that he's already won - he's already changed history so that the outcome of "the Crisis" has been changed! Before Superman can question what this means, he finds himself back flying towards the Perisphere and, as his memory of the events fades, can only conclude that Degaton was delusional - nothing has changed, and he greets all his fellow heroes from the JSA, Seven Soldiers Of Victory, Freedom Fighters, the Marvel Family, and others...

Back in the 23rd century, Gary Concord confirms with his scientists that their temporal engines have also secured the existence of the alternate world in which Superman, Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman and others were saved from the effects of Crisis - a unified world in which all the heroes of the Golden Age fight together as the All-Star Squadron!

I don't automatically assume that all my commissions take place in the same shared universe, but - if you choose to - you can assume that this is *my* explanation as to why the DC, Quality, Fawcett and Charlton heroes, together with the heroes who were retroactively wiped out by Crisis, all exist as part of my All-Star Squadron commissions. Or, of course, maybe it's just an imaginary story - as someone once said, aren't they all? 😉

Up next - a return to Golden Age stories of The Brave And The Bold (after a quick sideline I've asked Bambos to do for me).

I have to say "Gary Conord, The Ultra-Man' is a new "old" hero to me but as somebody who pulls the obscuria of the far-flung future, I say bring it on !!! Great Cover

What is that lady shaped curvy contraption that our heroes are trapped within?  Why does the sand inside make a ticking sound?

Had to like this one since I'm probably one of the few collectors that recognized the name Gary Concord before reading your write-up having collected pre-hero DC comics before stopping buying back issues at the end of the 1980's.  Always happy to see the obscure Golden Age characters brought back to view.  Also loved DC Comics Presents and Roy Thomas bringing Per Degaton back for us bronze age fans in All-Star Squadron.  Cool stuff.
