I can think of no better description than what Steve wrote before he was kind enough to sell me this piece. So I will quote him:

" I looked at every (I mean every) SSOC cover, and in my mind, there was only one cover that I thought would look right at home in the Louvre, Vatican, Hermitage, Smithsonian, etc. (all places my wife and I have visited). The level of detail is just amazing. If you look at the painting, Conan could be a Roman gladiator, but more importantly, the soldier looks like Rembrandt (or another Dutch master) could have painted him. And the "Fair Maiden" is the most naturally, beautiful woman I have seen painted, with a timeless look.

There are many great and iconic covers, but none that looks like an Old Master painted it.�

Masterful - what Rembrandt would have done if he was being commisioned for fantasy books in the 17th century haha
