Description

Once upon a time, when I began to collect animation art, it was almost universally believed that the most desirable pieces of such art were cels and background paintings (preferably ones that actually matched -- just as they were photographed and how they appeared on screen, but at least cels and backgrounds from the same cartoon or feature). Since there typically was just one background for about 100 or more cels which were photographed against it, there were often many cel owners who wanted the same background. This, of course, resulted in high prices for backgrounds, when backgrounds were even available to be purchased at all. So, it took me about four or five years before I bought my first cel and background setup.

I bought this setup from Carl Harper at a San Diego Con in the early 1980s. I made monthly payments to come up with the $1,500 total price. Carl needed the money so that he could make his own monthly payments on a cel and background from Don Donald, which he was buying at the same time. Although Carl passed away several years ago, I have never seen any of the animation pieces that I knew he owned come back onto the market. I'm pretty sure that my Grasshopper and the Ants setup, which I once prized so much, won't be up for sale in the future -- I sold it the the Disney Studio a few years back to raise money to buy something I just had to have, whatever that was.
