Description

I wish I had more choices that ink wash or pen and ink ... since it is all of the above! Back in the mid 70's Marvel (under the Curtis name) had several magazines that were in the B&W format. Unknown Worlds of Science fiction adapted some of the best science fiction and fantasy stories into comics. Great writers and amazing artists. This one is Gene Conan and Tom Palmer providing the moody introduction to issue number 2.

An absolutely stunning example of Colan's work. The storytelling is so clear and concise, with the camera movement making it feel as if we're watching the scene play itself out on film. The washes only serve to increase the tension and mood of the scene. Truly phenomenal example!

The Palmer wash brings out a whole new dimension to the Colan cinematography, utilizing the b&w magazine format to it's fullest potential. The white spaces are not going to print as bright or sharp as they are here.

Both pages equal black and white perfection. Moody and rich. Colan and Palmer knocking it out of the park.

I know I commented on this already, but I have to look at it every time it cycles up. It SO looks like a scene from a Twilight Zone I'd love to see. That face in panel 2 is mesmerizing. It is black-and-white perfection.

It would not surprise me if Colan didnt take TZ as an inspiration for this. The short lived Marvel Mag was definitely set up as a TZ, Outer Limits, Amazing Stories, pulp type format.

I have GOT to find some of these. This is one book I missed completely. They made 6 issues, and adapted some d@mn fine material.
