"Once the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice throughout the universe. Before the Dark Times. Before The Empire." Those were the words Obi-Wan Kenobi imparted onto Luke Skywalker in "A New Hope," but the prequel films, several animated series and the new canon Marvel comics all revealed some personal dark times for the wise Jedi Master. Inspired by the recent Disney+ series, I thought a man as alone and contemplative as Old Ben Kenobi could not help but dwell on these emotional scars. I started on an 8 x 14" legal size paper with Obi-Wan thinking about the deaths of his master, Quigon Jinn, and of Padme Amidala, respectively. The Star Wars blu-ray collection I had were instrumental in getting their likenesses right. I then enlarged it to 129% on 11 x 17", and from there I etched in a snarling Anakin Skywalker on the Mustafar hillside he was dismembered on, and overshadowed Padme with the spectre of Darth Vader. This counts because Obi-Wan sees Vader as a separate personna to the boy he trained. I even went a step further and made it the cracked helmet from the sixth episode, revealing Anakin's inner turmoil. But then I decided to go for the gusto and depicted a vision of Obi-Wan's long lost love, Duchess Satine Kryze of Mandalore from "Clone Wars." I decided to try fancasting and used some of the nuances from actress Cate Blanchett, whom I think would be perfect for the role. It's my hope to fully render this to the best of my ability in time for the next big Star Wars event. More as it develops. May The Force Be With You.
