Pretty sure Arion was modeled after Stewart Payne.

Wow, great content quality on this page! What I love even more is that there is some uncredited inking going on here in that bottom panel. Jan clearly inked the Arion figure but someone else stepped in to ink the rest of that panel and by the looks of it, most likely her husband, Tom Mandrake. Such an interesting contrast in styles and inking approaches, with hers being precise and slick while his uses the Klaus Janson approach and remaining extremely organic and textured. Great stuff!

The 80's were such a heyday for comics.  Especially the Big Two.  Seems like every month there were a slew of new #1 issues.  And the speculator market was off and running.  Duursema, and her husband Tom Mandrake (both Kubert School grads), were DC stalwarts back in the day.  For some reason, Jan kept ending up with new "A" titles.  Arion, Arak, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (yes, I have them all, LOL).  I enjoyed her work for the most part.  And this is a wonderful example with a great half splash.

The visual tangent on Arion's face between panels 2 and 3 are nice and even the colorist threw in some hints as well.  The creatures in the large panel are of a less refined inking showing warts and all compared to the clean and pretty boy looking Arion.

Jan's an amazing artist, and her work on Arion stands the test of time.

That last panel is fantastic.  So much inking.
