DescriptionJoe Bowler was an incredible illustrator and painter. After creating illustrative artwork that the graced the pages of America's most popular magazines for decades, Bowler turned his attention to fine arts and painting later in his career. I would guess this portrait of Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, was created around the time of that transition and demonstrates Bowler's incredible mastery of oil paints and color. In researching this painting, a prior auction said it hung in former Senator Bob Dole's office at one time.Social/Sharing |

Fantastic Bowler example! Great likeness despite the more somber expression than almost any press photos of Nixon I can recall, and such a solid portrait with subtle shadows, halftones, and well chosen lost edges
