ROBERT VICKREY Time Magazine 1965

I always admired the work of Robert Remsen Vickrey (August 26, 1926 - April 17, 2011), and I am happy to finally have an original piece of his artwork. This portrait of economist John Maynard Keyes was created for the December 31, 1965 TIME Magazine cover, but it went unpublished. Created in Vickrey's best known medium of egg tempera and ink, if you look closely (see extra images), you can see Vickrey depicted the financier exclusively with monetary symbols- a very creative approach! The eventual published cover was also painted by Vickrey, depicting an older version of the man and executed in Vickrey's more traditional technique (although he used the some of the same monetary symbols in the background). I like this one better, but it was probably too experimental for TIME Magazine's tastes. Vickrey included this painting in a couple of exhibitions of his work, so he probably liked it better too!
