DescriptionThis story kind of stuck with me...I hovered over buying it for ages but the story concept would randomly pop in my head on occassion. I figured if it seemed to stick so strongly in my head that I should get it.The story is a short and simple one. The day after doomsday the last man alive is walking among the ruins of the city he once called home. Every single thing is left ruined...yet while walking the man comes across a single perfect, unscuffed, unblemished window and it reminds him of all that was...after taking some time to reflect on this window capable of reflection...he smashes it to bits and walks away...it hurts to remember what was. Such a simple concept but it strikes a note. Social/Sharing |

A Len Wien story! Sci-fi during this time period was a lot of downbeat cold war nuclear fear for our futures reflecting the mood of the country after all the tumult of the times. Great that it has a simple premise and a great payoff that tells us something about human nature. The way it is drawn and laid out is amazing. Draut normall has a heavier line for horror, but works lighter for this more intimate story.

Stories like this one stuck with me as well. In fact, I think it was about this time that I started having dreams that the missiles were flying and I (or my family and I) would have rush to a fallout shelter (there was one, clearly marked, in the basemen of Belk's, a nearby department store from back in the day, so it was often the place I/we were trying to go). Eventually, those dreams stopped, and I don't miss them, but I remember them more vividly than I do the dream I had this morning.
