Description

I haven't posted anything into my gallery in quite a while, so I'm really happy to make a "comeback" today and I know many of you will be absolutely stunned that the art is drawn by someone I rarely buy art from, the fabulous Tom Grummett! But I thought, "Why not surprise people for a change and show them something they don't typically see from me?".

Anyway, this piece is inked perfectly by Karl Kesel, the most consistent inker who ever worked over Tom's pencils and the one who came closest to leaving the finished product looking closest to what Tom's pencils actually look like. The cover layout is explosive and action packed and for those few of you who care, I'll give you a bit of context to understand what's happening here....

This issue, as best as I can remember it, was part of a story in which I believe Karl Kesel (The writer as well as inker) borrowed from the classic early 1980's film, Cannonball Run. Some dude named Mr. Big (no, not the same one from Sex and the City) sets up a race called the Demolition Run. His intent is to cash in financially by recording the race and then selling the broadcast rights after the race is over. Contestants compete in any sort of vehicle they wish to and of course, the contestants are primarily cheaters who will do anything to stop their opponents in order to assure victory. In this tale, the good guys compete using the Whiz Wagon, the flying vehicle formerly used by the Forever People and the Newsboy Legion and is piloted by Mick and Roxy. Superboy flies ahead to try to protect the Whiz Wagon from the other competitors, but one vehicle opens fire on the Whiz Wagon, causing it to crash into another vehicle and make a crash landing, which is essentially what you see happening on this cover. Ultimately they lose the race to Fastback of New Genesis.

I don't really remember any details of Cannonball Run because I only saw it once when it hit television screens during the 80's, but remember it was just a wild, humorous & action packed film. In other words, FUN! That's exactly what Grummett and Kesel's Superboy series represents to me, FUN, which is why I never get tired of adding more art from this series to my collection. I hope you all enjoy!

Your experience with the movie Cannonball Run is similar to my own in that I watched it once (although in my case it was 1995), and I don't remember the details (probably because it was the middle of the night),  but I do know it was tremendous fun.  And you're right about Grummett and Kesel's Superboy run - it was a ton of fun at a time when I couldn't find much else on the stands that was fun.  This is a great cover from a run that I wish could have lasted much longer.

Great action, and it's nice to see the detail that gets obscured by the questionable shadowing on the published cover. Congrats!

I love fun! But the coloring certainly did not do that art any favors. And I get it, colorful explosions are eye grabbing on the spinner rack. But the line work on the explosion looks great in black-and-white too.

There are so many more details in the art!  It's part of the enjoyment of this hobby, seeing the artist's original vision before the production processes take over.

More reminiscent of Gumball Rally. Which I saw in the movies a way long time ago and don't know if it's ever been on TV. They made quite a few of those cross country, crash-em up films in the 70's, including Deathrace 2000 and Grand Theft Auto in which Ron Howard starred and his directorial debut.

This is such a barnburner of a cover !!  I absolutely love it!  It has the weight and impact of an entire 22-page comic book story in one stupendous image. So weird that they did so much shadowing of the characters in the colorized version.  No likey!  The black and white image rocks so much harder!

In the day, Tom Grummett can not be beat
Of a Superboy motorcross dream
At night, we ride through covers of glory
In Whiz Wagon machine
Sprung from cages out of Cadmus science
Chrome wheeled, ink injected and Kesel out over the lines
Oooh, baby this guy buys comics off the rack
It's a death trap, it's a comic art rap
We gotta get art while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby, Demolition Run

Great cover and especially lush and suited inks. Grummett really benefited from Kesel and Hazlewood during that run.

Cannonball run was early 80's and wouldn't be on TV until the mid 80's.  If you don't remember Burt Reynolds and Don DeLuise, you may be thinking of another movie.
Is this cover going to be on your show and tell on Sunday of art you've sold through the years?  Since you're selling this to me, right?

Nah, I was definitely thinking of Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett and Dom DeLuise & Jaime Farr. I got the timeline confused, because I also remember Burt Reynolds being the male lead in pretty much everything I saw as a kid during the 70's. AND YES, THIS WILL DEFINITELY not BE SHOWN ON SUNDAY'S SHOW & TELL EPISODE! 😃

Even though I'm not familiar with this run, this is the kind of cover that almost recaps everything one needs to know before entering the fray. Tremendous! Congrats!

Wait, you like Tom Grummett art?? i am shocked and dismayed to hear of this stunning revelation!  And, here I thought you only collected art by Irving Forbush.  Seriously, great cover Ruben with a lot of kinetic energy and motion.  Love the composition and Karl's inks over Tom.  Congrats on yet another great Grummett cover!

I love Tom Grummett's run on Superboy during the nineties.  He brought such depth to the character through his art.  Tons of detail on this beauty!  Killer cover for sure.

Stunning cover! Love Grummett and Kesel's work here! The explosion feels powerful and I love seeing all the stuff flying through the air from the impact! Superboy looks cool here, even though he's being hurled through the air like a marionette with its strings cut! Fabulous pick-up!

Another Grummet stunner, Rubén, and you're not kidding about Kesel's excellent inking here; from the explosion and smoke clouds (and the great choice to keep the character to the bottom left of Superboy mostly unshaded for visual balance) to the checkered finish line banner and (very nice!) rubble at the bottom, it all has such a great weight and feel to it.  Thanks for including the published cover image; some very interesting choices that give a whole other "read" to the piece.  Super cool piece, Rubén!  Welcome back, and good on you for wanting to celebrate your return by branching out into new artistic waters by showing a piece by this promising talent.  Keep your eye on Mr. Grummett, Rubén - you won't be disappointed (trust me)!  :)

Great composition, with everything in movement away from the explosion!  Definitely does what a cover should want you to do - open up the book to see what's up inside!  Congrats!
