DescriptionGotta love a cover that features everybody's favorite mutant badass in full berserker mode! Claws out, snarl on his face, the whole nine yards. That’s the order of the day on this striking cover for Marvel Comics Presents #133. Penciled and inked by the hugely underrated Steve Lightle, this high-octane cover is nothing if not explosive. Lightle, whose drawings are usually very detailed, dramatically simplifies his style on this piece. Check out the high-contrast effect he uses here, blowing out most of the detail--except on Wolverine's face--to focus our attention on his fearsome rage. Lightle doesn't depict the target of Wolverine's attack either, but instead highlights the slashes from his claws with white tracers following in their wake. IMHO, it’s a killer cover that puts Wolverine and his savage ferocity front and center.Social/Sharing |

A reverse silhouette of sorts. Gives it a unique and sticking look!

A very fun cover, and kinda a slap in the face for Iron Fist.

Big fan of the Marvel Comics Presents title. It was a breath of fresh air when it came out at that time with several mini series stories per book that went month to month.

Lightle doing covers was always fantastic but this high contrast phase of his career was really interesting. Great cover.

Very powerful and captivating image, for once they should have published a black and white cover!

A really unique look for Wolverine. Steve Lightle was great talent. He's had his share of gigs but he deserved to be on some really high profile books.

I really enjoyed titles like Marvel Comics Presents and Marvel Fanfare, that featured stand alone stories or self contained story arcs. They were a wonderful showcase for artists who didn't have regular gigs (and even some who did). This cover is a stunning example of high contrast work by Lightle. Certainly very reminiscent of Miller or Risso. Of course leave it to Marvel to botch things up by coloring the published cover YELLOW. They would have been better off just leaving it colorless. That certainly would have made for a much more profound presence on the comic rack. Congrats on another great score my friend.

What an incredibly powerful Wolverine cover, Bill! Steve Lightle (who is, as you say, highly underrated) is a master at using extreme light & dark contrasts to make you focus on what he wants you to focus on. Brilliant, thanks for sharing!!

The cover would have been even more effective if they left the color out for this reverse negative sihouette. High impact visual! Wolvie's feral slashing is tearing up the cover and ripping through into the rest of the comic!

I am incredibly amused how this cover is a giant glorious page slashing Wolverine and then behind him, tucked away, very small, covered in slash marks it says "also: Iron Fist." Pretty clear what the pecking order is ;) Congrats on the pickup.

I always loved Lightle's Classic X-Men covers, and losing him at a relatively young age to Covid last year was so sad- Steve had so much more wonderful art ahead of him.
This is a fine example of his work!

Congrats, Bill, on acquiring this powerful example of why Lightle was one of the great (and also underrated) artists of the '80s and '90s for both DC and Marvel. If this wasn't on a t-shirt it should have been!

A striking cover, Bill! Well, probably best to say 'another striking cover', but the point stands!

I've always been a big fan of high contrast comic book work and this is such a stylistic example of it. I've said it plenty of times before and I'll continue to say it, Lightle was one of the absolute best cover artists of the 1980's and into the 90's yet never seemed to get any attention back then. I'm thrilled to see that art collectors have finally begun to seek his art out over the last 20 years or so and give it the respect it has always deserved!

Epic cover for a monumental time in comics. Wolverine really getting into his own and continuing to become a fierce animalistic character. a beautiful rendering by Lightle!

What I like about this era of MCP is that the artists seemed to be free to do a little experimenting. This one seems to have that Miller on Sin City vibe. Congrats, Bill!

Love me some Wolverine. Killer cover and love how he plays with the contrast of black and white. Steve Lightle is great. An Aaron Judge level home run,

A Wolverine who is almost a ghostly silhouette. Lightle pares back his detailed style to render a cover that is stark and beautiful in its (relative) simplicity. I'm very glad to see this piece in your collection and it's a nice way to remember a fine talent who was taken from us too soon.

Awesome cover that looks far better in black and white than in color as published. Also has a real Frank Miller/Sin City vibe to it with the high contrast. Congrats!

I loved this phase oh Lightle's where he was going bonkers on more design-heavy covers. Complementing the lighting with the figure in negative space is a really cool touch. Congrats, Bill!
