Description
The first item shown here is the original cover design for Whitman's publication #845, MICKEY MOUSE and the MIRACLE MAKER. Done in India ink and colored pencils. The published cover differs from the original version in the addition of "Walt Disney's" along the top and the colors.
The thread of this story starts in 1939 with the short Mickey's Magic Lamp. It was promoted in GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MAGAZINE July 1940. Tom Wood did a wonderful genie that granted Mickey's wishes. The problem was that the short had no genie but only an animate lamp moving about on its own and the title was changed to Pluto's Dream House. Tom died October 14, 1940 and was succeeded by Hank Porter.
Floyd Gottfredson was also in on the act when he plotted and drew a daily strip continuity called the MIRACLE MASTER which ran from September 11,1939 to January 13,1940.Tom and Floyd's genie looked almost identical.
Then in 1942 the Gottfredson strip was put into BETTER LITTLE BOOK #1429 under the title MICKEY MOUSE and the MAGIC LAMP. Chapter 11 in the book is called "Mickey, Miracle Master."

In 1948 The MIRACLE MASTER strip was highly condensed into WHITMANS " MIRACLE MAKER" with Gottfredson's art updated slightly with Mickey wearing his period zoot suit hat.
Lastly Gottfredson returned to the story again when in MAY 1979 he painted his sixth canvas titled "Mickey Mouse and the Magic Lamp.", in which Mickey spends a rainy afternoon in an antique shop and finds a magic lamp whose threadbare genie will grant his every wish. With the best of intentions Mickey seeks to help the world, but the results are not at all what he expects.

I'm open to the thought that Hank Porter may have been the cover artist to my original. Paulo, at Disney Comic Art A owns the frontispiece and says it is by Manual Gonzales. IF I had a printed letter from each of these excellent artists i probably would know for sure as there is a printed note on the border of my art which closely matches PORTER. Cover art is often done by a different artist.

Very nice that Mickey was the gateway to introduce these fairytales to kids.  Can't deny Gottfredson his due upholding the highest quality of art under the Disney name.
