Couldn't be happier to add this giant 18.5x24 Peter Bagge Hate illustration to my collection.

My collecting sweet spot is North American indie and alternative cartoonists from the 1980s and onward. At a glance you can see a lot of Jaime Hernandez and Seth art in my collection but I've long been seeking the right Peter Bagge piece with the cast of characters from his seminal 1990s Fantagraphics book, Hate.

I prefer great interior pages to covers and splashes but, after contacting Peter Bagge last year, I learned a lot of the memorable pages from Hate and Neat Stuff had already been sold. From that point, I resolved to bide my time.

My patience was rewarded on Day One of the November 2022 Comic Art Live when I saw this piece, drawn in 2011 to accompany a Scott Eder gallery show of Bagge's work. This illustration riffs on the memorable cover to Hate #15 (see additional images) and was used for a silkscreen print that accompanied the show, although I prefer it in black and white to the colors used on the original cover.

This might be a one-and-done Bagge for me, unless the "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Heroin" page turns up somewhere (see additional image).

You finally bagged a Bagge, and what a nice one. Congrats, Mark. I really love this.Great images of the five main characters from the Seattle run on this classic series.

This really is a phenomenal piece, especially for someone happy enough to be one and done with this series. It looks great on Mark's wall, especially as it's so large. The piece is blaring energy with Bagge's signature cartooning style. All the grosteque exaggerations are made beautiful with smooth and slick inks. Beautifully represents and celebrates a storied career.

This is sweet. The gang’s all here, and for anyone who loves Hate this would definitely be a “one-and-done”. And I am sure anyone who saw the “Heroin” illo available anywhere would give you a shout – that’s the CAF community for you.

Hilarious Peter Bagge Hate illustration! I love how Buddy is reacting to all the screamers in his life. Don't we all know just hoe that feels. Really the best Hate piece I've seen. Congrats!
