Italian Disney fans were shocked when a sequel to "Topolino e la Spada di Ghiaccio" was announced, the first part of an epic fantasy saga written and illustrated by the Master Massimo De Vita, starting from December 1982 (Topolino magazine #1411-1412-1413) to January 1993.
In this saga, Mickey and Goofy travel to the Argaar, a fantasy world in a parallel dimension, that is under the menace of evil forces. As you can easily guess, they help the inhabitants of that world to save it from its doom. They need to deal with many challenges, weird creatures, and inhospitable environments, as in the tradition of the very best fantasy.
What's peculiar, in these stories, is that the real hero is Goofy, with his particular way of thinking, while Mickey is his sidekick... and everything works wonderfully!
Thing is, the saga was tied to its creator (Massimo De Vita, now retired) and thought to be concluded, but Topolino's director thought a new chapter, to celebrate the 40 years since the publishing of the very first episode, could be an option and the creative team of Marco Nucci (script) and Cristian Canfailla (art) worked hard on it.
So here's the cover to the first part of the new story, "La Leggenda della Spada di Ghiaccio", marvelously illustrated by Andrea Freccero, somehow structured like a cover from the 80's and showing the most beloved characters from the saga (even if Yor and Boz are not present in the first chapter). It's meant to represent the link to the past.
