DescriptionSketch of ED BRUBAKER by himself made at Comic Con Portugal 2019.A4 size (8.3in x 11.7in) For those that don't know, the famous writer Ed Brubaker actually drew his own stories in a past life (late 80s, early 90s). He was part of the indie comics scene of the time and had to draw his own stories, some of them biographical, others fictional, all based on personal experiences. At the time Brubaker was invited for a comics event in Oporto where he proposed to his wife somewhere in the Douro shores and since then he is found of the country. In 2005 I met him at Amadora's comics festival, it was my 2nd time attending a comics event and didn't have much of his work but bought some comics and TPBs for him to sign. Since then I've been keeping a close look at his work and have been buying almost everything he publishes. (A quick story, he liked to attend the event so much that included Sintra in one of his Daredevil stories where Matt makes a quick stop on route to Paris.) When I heard he was attending Comic Con Portugal back in 2019 I was thrilled! It took me a long time to choose what to bring for him to sign. I didn't want to be one of those annoying fans carrying full runs but even restricting myself to key issues, there were too man to carry. I ended up bringing a good selection and hoped for the best. The event was very chill, he signed books very quickly, chatted with everyone and was able to sign everything people brought. In my case I was by far the fan that brought the most with stuff spanning from all of his career at the big 2 (I don't have much from his early work). Of course he didn't recognize me from 2005 but quickly memorized my face because I kept asking to sign some issues and would go back to the end of the line to sign some more. If I knew it was going to be that quick to have everything signed, I would have brought more. At the end of the 2nd day (the event is 4 days) with nothing left to sign, I asked if he could draw something even though he's a writer. He explained he doesn't draw at events anymore because he doesn't want to spend even more time at signings having to sketch but since I was the last in line, he did this quick sketch of himself and asked not to tell anyone. Sorry Ed but the memories are too good not to share. Hope you forgive me and come back to Portugal any time you want! Social/Sharing |
