DescriptionThis is a commission that Michael Golden did for me during a store appearance in Brussels in 2010.Actually, the attendance to that event being low, this is the second of three commissions Michael drew for me that day, the other two being the Moon Knight and Venom, seen in this very gallery). I thought that a Mack was an obvious great fit for two reasons. The first one is that Michael Golden is the obvious main influence of my favorite artist, the recently departed genius that was Jason Pearson. The second is that when Jason released Body Bags, his most (in)famous and influential work, he went straight to his artistic source and asked Michael to produce the 4 covers to the original series. To this day and upon his untimely passing, I’ve heard and read comments of many, professional artists included, not being able to tell who, out of the two, drew which covers of that original series 😊 Now to say Michael really got the essence of the character would be an understatement. Mack looks dangerous as hell here, brutish if not fully bestial. Even without any visual point of reference, he looks enormous. As per his usual, Michael perfectly spotted the blacks and shadows here. The two elements I love the most are the way he drew the grin of his mask which is contrasted by the intensity and the violence of his stare, as well as the way he inversed the two knifes, introducing a kind of hidden ying and yang touch in the composition, something Jason himself was fond of within his own published pieces and commissions. I humbly believe that in this one, the artistic link between the two artists, my two favorite artists to be precise, is achieved. The circle is complete, so to speak. And I like to think that Jason would have smiled favorably on this particular homage, my only regret being to have waited so damn long to post it for him to see, now that he is gone. May he draw in Peace. Agreed, it begins on a somewhat sad note, and I promise the tone will get lighter but this is a purposed homage, as this is the first entry of my 2023 CAF birthday party. Wow! What a perfect character for Golden to tackle. Not only did he absolutely nail it, I'm sure it also wasn't lost on him just how much of an influence he had on its creator. I was going to say that I couldn't imagine anyone else drawing Mack, but this piece proves that there is really only one other person who you would want to see even try.

This really is a fantastic illustration, even more impressive given that it was done at a store signing! It's a shame that you never got the chance to show this to Pearson, but I'm sure he would've absolutely loved this. Oh and, Happy CAF Birthday?

This piece packs a punch! Golden getting it done in a store signing with those deep marker inks looks sharp! Nice choice in getting Mack to fill up the entire piece.

Wicked cool Golden, FM! Mack's boxed-in bulk really reminds me of the Dark Knight #2 cover (great use of the space!) and I love the disparity between the mask's smile and the gaze of the eyes (just as you point out). Great balance of blacks here, and it must have been really special to hit a store signing that was sparsely attended enough that you could score three pieces from him (and three scorching pieces at that)! Congrats, Fred!

Fantastic selection for Golden based on your connection to Jason's work!

Stunning piece by Michael Golden! I love how he embraced the character Pearson had created and drew it as if it were his own.

Great hulking rendition of one of his signature characters! It's like he's hunching some to fit on the art board. RIP maestro Pearson, and congrats.

Admiring all your cool Golden commissions. I bought a Rogue one from him several years ago for a friend of mine (birthday present). Michael draws so close to the borders I had trouble matting and framing it. He certainly fills the page. Congrats!
