DescriptionDisplayed here is the obsessive love triangle for which the strip is well known. Offissa Pupp cares for Krazy Kat but Krazy loves the mouse instead. The love is unrequited as Ignatz hates the feline using every opportunity to pelt the "Kat" with bricks. This is the final year the sunday strip appeared in the smaller panel black and white format. The sundays' themselves took a hiatus as no more are known to have been published after August 1934. Starting in 1935, they returned in color of which Herriman made bold use. He reduced the amount of hatchwork and used larger, more open panels. Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst was a huge fan and when the strip debuted in 1913 he gave Herriman a lifetime contract with King Features SYN. This guaranteed the artist a comfortable living and an outlet for his work despite its lack of popularity at the time. Today, George Herriman's status as a pioneer is unquestioned and Krazy Kat is often listed as one of the greatest comics of the 20th century. Herriman's work has been a primary influence on cartoonists such as E.C. Segar, Will Eisner, Charles Schultz, Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Bill Watterson, and Chris Ware. I'm proud to add this example to my collection. Social/Sharing |

Fabulous! Love triangle is right, but I always interpreted Ignatz's brick slinging as a form of consumation of his affection for KK, but I cleave to your view that the Kat doesn't love the lawdog. Much to ponder in Herriman's Sundays

From Kirby Krackle to Krazy Kat? You are a complicated man, Mr. Kosenkranius :). Big congrats, this is amazing.

This is a great one, Hans! Every time Herriman does something involving film, I wonder if there are Hollywood in-jokes sprinkled through it. Kin-Chee Kitchen?
