Description

Illustration from the February 4, 1968 edition of the Baltimore Sun.

Wrightson dropped the “e” off his first name, so as not to be confused with the Olympic Swimmer Bernie Wrightson. As his notoriety grew, he reclaimed that letter.

Bernie worked at the sun from 1966-1968. I found (online) 5 different illustration that he was credited with in that time.

12 x 18 ink art from the future Master at the age of 19 years old.

Even though this is an early work, it still has some recognizable Wrightsonian flourishes.  Really nice example !!!

Man thats really wonderful... that i guess it's a shirt hanging on the other side of the door in the background... if you look really closely at it... it really looks like an obscured man thats chained by his wrists... I mean it really really really looks like that you can even see how he outlined the hair in the shadow where the head is... I think he was sneaking scary shit into the norman rockwell-esque picture his bosses payed him to draw.. cause he could... which would totally be a Bernie move.

From the looks of that door, maybe it's a meat locker.  So, it really could be someone hung by their wrists.

Now that you mention it, it wouldnt be too far of a stretch to envision a face in that dark crosshatching, and a couple manicled wrists. (Adding a detail pic in "additional photos")

totally a meat locker.. way to heavy of a door to just be a simple back room.

A look at an old mercantile.  It's where you can see Wrightson's illustrative construction taking place, the attention paid to each and every item on the shelves, on the floor, and even the ceiling as they serve as training for him.   You can see elements of dungeons, mad scientist labs, Frankenstein's lab, and everywhere else he drew along his career.

It's amazing how great Berni was at such a young age!

This is a spectacular piece.   Love Bernie's fine linework.   A hint of the greatness to come.  Congrats.
