I'm just wondering, how the hell did they ever get away with naming a new character Ice Man? I mean, did Marvel even send them a Cease & Desist?

Well, an Tceman film came out in 1984. And Val Kilmer was  Iceman in Top Gun in 1986. If anyone could sue, it would be this guy.

Actually, DC should create another character, a super-villain naturally, based on this Polish dude! Those other examples are okay, because they are in completely different businesses. For instance, you and I could each open retail businesses right next to each other and as long as the business we're in is completely different, we could each use the same name. So you could be Iceman Comics and I could have Iceman Hardware. But two companies, direct competitors to each other in the exact same business, I believe are infringing on a copyright (or is it trademark?) when they each have a fictitious character by the same name. I guess the question is, "Can they get away with it because the one that came after is not based on having any powers related to ice and cold?". I guess Michael Lovitz needs to chime in here and set us straight!
