Description

A great page from Matt Wagner's Mage: The Hero Discovered #3, page 9. This one has Mirth and Edsel in nearly every panel and the Umbra Sprite's shade in the first panel. Mirth and the Umbra Sprite are throwing around some literary banter from Alice in Wonderland.

The grey-line consists of an acetate overlay of the pencil and ink page and a separate board containing a grey-line reproduction of the original page; Matt Wagner hand-colored the grey-line himself using watercolors. The original grey-line is done on a 9"x12" board and the art measures 6" x 9".

I've included an additional pic of the hand-colored artwork as well to show off the detailed work. Matt in the recent CAF interview said it was a different paper that made these colors look more bold and intense in these first 3 issues as compared to the later issues when he started to employ other paper and airbrush techniques.

It makes you wonder if he held the overlay over it just to make sure it turned out right while the paints were drying for these eary issues while this method was still being developed.
